That's it. 12 more hours until my share of summer program is over. Five hours on Wednesday. Five on Thursday. And two on Friday. They'll be holding an end-of-summer barbecue. Hot dogs, chips and soda. A few kids will be dyeing shirts. I'll be there helping. But I don't have to show up until around 4.
I can't say I'm unhappy about summer being mostly over.
The disregard for rules, the small quarters, the bees. The dirty play shed (where we will be going AGAIN to end our camp) and the penny-pinching dollar-flushing corporate mentality. It's aggravating and bothersome, but it's funny, too. If they were to listen to the people doing the actual work, we could both save them money AND grow the programs. But we get shut down often enough that some of us just give up trying to communicate.
I visited my school on Monday. It was lovely to be out there again, it feels like home. At the end of the school year, our attendance secretary retired. She was the first face I saw when I started working out there, and an ally. We worked well together, making sure the kids were safe every day after school. I was hoping for a good replacement for her.
When I stopped in Monday, behind her desk was a familiar face. The person who took the position has been working at the school off and on for quite some time. She has held a few part time positions with the district. This is her first full time one. She's really nice and someone I get along with. Added bonus, I already have a relationship with her, so I don't have to start from scratch. She knows me to be reliable and competent and I know she likes kids and is easy to work with.
So tomorrow I have to make a dental appointment, (I am way behind, it's been almost a year since I went) do a little cleaning, be ready to haul all my crap home from summer camp as we have to vacate our cafeteria by Thursday, and try to stay off my feet as much as I can. Still bothering me, although I saw the podiatrist AGAIN last week. Adjusted orthotics. It takes time for my knee to adapt to the new positioning. I may end up having to get the orthotics adjusted again, or even have new ones made. Yippee.
In other news. Went to Sprawlmart this morning to get a couple things. Found some baby onesies to dress the triplets in. They're each in a onesie with jeans over the top. Rule #1... no undressing the babies. I've seen so much inappropriate behavior this summer that I'm just making it a no-brainer. If they want to look at doll butts or whatever, they can do that at home.
I can't believe I went out there and didn't look for baby bottles and other little doll accessories. I wish I had the money to really buy a few things. Stroller, baby beds.. I was going to buy some receiving blankets but they were ridiculously priced, so I figured I'd buy some flannel at JoAnn this week and use that. I'm meeting my manager there to buy the annual plastic tablecovers. We use them all year long, then I bring them to summer program. I figure I can get her to spring for the flannel since I bought the babies and their clothes.
Anyway, I know. Nothing exciting. But that's my life.
12 hours.
Tick tock.
Wonder if you can take some permanent marker to the dolls and draw underpants on them? So they can NEVER be naked. ;-)

They have cloth bodies. I don't think I'll be drawing on them. I supposed I could make them a little diaper and sew it on, but the group of children I have in my program won't undress them anyway. Once I say 'nope' they are really good about stuff. Consistency.
DeleteIf you have a dollar store handy, you should check there.
ReplyDeleteI went to our dollar store last weekend. Got some little spoons there, but their baby stuff section, which used to have bibs and hats and assorted other cute things no longer does. ::sigh::
DeleteSo I will be going back to sprawlmart, since I bought the wrong sized underwear and need to return them anyway.
Okay... I had to read that SEVERAL times.
ReplyDeleteI thought Matt was having triplets.
And all I could think is "For the love of GOD how did I miss this????"
Well that would be exciting news indeed. :)
DeleteNo. Just little babies from Goodwill. We had a couple babies over summer, and the kids really enjoyed them. Of course we had a couple assholes who thought it was funny to hold them by the feet and slam them into the table or the wall. Same assholes thought it was humorous to strip them and make dick jokes. So we're just not going to undress the babies. And we're making a rule on the first day that the babies need to be treated as if they are real babies. Held gently and treated with kindness. Those who can't do that won't play there.
:)
Oh, and I should add that none of the people who did those things are part of my program. They were (predictably) from the program where the site director lets them get away with, well, just about everything. ::sigh::
DeleteWe only look as good as our weakest program. Our reputation suffers when people see a program like that in action.
