Ribbit

Matt found this little guy in the flower bed on Sunday evening. He was a teeny little thing, about the size of the nail on my index finger.

Lyssa held him while I took a couple pictures.

I love his little splayed toes.

I believe it's a Spring Peeper, which is a tree frog. Which would explain the toes and why he's in our flowers... we don't have a pond or anything.

When I was a teenager, my friend Hollie's grandparents owned a motel with a pool. Every spring, they cleaned all the wildlife and stagnant water out and refilled it. One night, before that year's work had been done, we were out there catching frogs.

A car drove into the parking lot by the pool. It was a couple boys we knew from school (borrowing their dad's car), and we went over there to talk to them, both of us carrying a frog.

Danny, the driver, wanted to hold my frog, so I handed it to him. He was looking at it when it jumped out of his hands and got lost inside the vehicle.

We tore that car apart. Moved seats and looked and looked. Nothing. No frog. Got a flashlight and looked some more. Never did find it. Eventually they left.

Well, of course the frog died in the car. I heard from Danny after school started that his dad was asking for two weeks, "WHAT IN THE HELL IS THAT HORRIBLE SMELL???"

He didn't tell his dad what it was because he was afraid he'd be in trouble, and it eventually went away. I don't know if they ever found the dried remains.

So when Lyssa showed up in my bedroom with that little tiny frog,
("Look Mom! Matt found a frog in the flowers! Isn't it cute?") I made her leave without me even looking at the thing. (I've seen a lot of frogs in my lifetime, ya know...) I could just see it getting loose and getting under my bed or into a corner or somewhere we'd never find it... and decomposing.

She went as far as the kitchen, and stopped and said, "Hey Mom, take a picture of this, will you?"

And I said, "GET OUT GET OUT GET OUTSIDE I'll be right there!!"

While we stood on the front porch, taking a few pictures, the frog escaped four times.

I'm glad we were outside.
:)

Then, I taught Lyssa the trick of holding on to his back legs gently to keep him still while I snapped photos.

If you have not read the post from yesterday, go read it. I'm having my very first bloggy giveaway.
I feel so... powerful.

  1. I love frogs and we had a couple of them in 'Vegas as pets. They are a lot of work.

I hope our kids never let one die in my car. That would suck.

    Hugs!!

  3. It is rather cute. We have had a few frogs around here lately, but they are somewhat bigger than that little guy.

  4. I adore tree frogs, until they adopt the space exactly under my window and think I love their all-hours serenading...

    Fantastic pic!
