I took a few minutes to find the tie dye tutorial videos I used last week.

Here's the link to the video that shows you how to fold your fabric to end up with a heart design. Warning... the music and the person demonstrating the technique are both really annoying, and I'd suggest turning your speakers off.

I did not use pencil on my shirt, and I did not get the shirt wet before marking it. I used a water based marker (washable Crayola marker) and just drew it freehand on a dry shirt. It still worked fine and did not show any marker color after soaking in the soda ash solution.
Here's the link to the video that shows the chevron or V pattern, too. I notice in watching both videos that the demonstrators are (much) sloppier than I am with the dye, but still end up with a decent product. I did not tie mine the same way. I used string, but cut it each time I tied a row across. I think that just getting the general idea of how to fold and tie was enough to get me started. Probably enough for most of you, too.
