They should be able to raise a family, make medical decisions for their spouse, and be given the rights of any other married couple.
Why shouldn't they?
Why is it even a question?

Edited to add this family picture, swiped from Jason's
blog (with his permission.) If you have a good half hour to an hour to read, go to his blog and read his story, linked on his sidebar. You'll laugh, you'll cry... you may even gain new understanding.
If you believe homosexuality is wrong, and as impossible as it seems to me, some people actually do believe that... how is it your business?
If your religion says it's wrong, please point out any biblical reference that makes you the judge or gives you the right to decide who is allowed to be in love?
Show me where it says you have the right to legislate your definition of love and marriage on anyone else.
(Generic you, of course... I'm pretty sure that everyone who reads here has an open mind and heart and would never deny basic rights to adults who want to be married.)
So I went to the Courage Campaign and signed the petition.
They do ask for your email address and zip code. Your name is optional. I had no problem putting my name on there.
If you think like I do, please go sign.
And if you don't think like I do, why are you reading here?
From the website:
("Fidelity": Watch the video and join our letter to the (California) state Supreme Court, signed by over 250,000 peopleTell the Supreme Court to invalidate Prop 8, reject Ken Starr's case, and let loving, committed couples marry. DEADLINE EXTENDED: March 2)
I think we should allow all people the right to love and marry the person of their choice.
As it says on my sidebar... It's okay. It's only love. The whole world could use more of it.
Yes, yes, yes!

I fully agree with you and everything you said. I signed the petition last week. Can I steal the graphic at the top of your sidebar for my blog? (I promise to copy and paste it onto my own computer)
ReplyDeletePlease take it. I took it from Jason's blog, and added the hyperlink to it myself.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see it on everyone's blog, really.
:)
I hadn't seen this Roy Zimmerman clip yet! It rocks! Sometimes people just have a way of putting things that really takes away all argument.
ReplyDeleteYou rock, too, by the way! Thank you.
I used to be set against it. I'm not so much anymore. We have a lesbian person at work. I think she is nice and her heart is in the right place.
ReplyDeleteI have my opinion on the matter, you have yours. And how is it your business to put down people who might have a different opinion than yours? Just asking?
Gay and Lesbian marriage is legal in Canada. And now it looks like Polygamy is next.
Sirdar--I would like to know how you make the leap from legalizing gay marriage to legalizing polygamy?
ReplyDeleteI always laugh when religious people use that as an argument since polygamy IS ok by Biblical standards--all of the Big Dudes in the Bible were polygamists and no one says a thing about it.
Oh, and opinions are one thing. Everyone has them and they don't have to be the same. It is when those opinions interfere with how people want to live their lives that things get ugly. Some of us just want those who have the power to turn their opinions into laws to think really hard about what they are doing and to take the lives they will mess up into consideration.
All that being said...I have often thought my laundry load would not be as daunting if I had another Sister-Wife to help me out. (just kidding, I think.) AND I am so very proud that I am Canadian and that my gay friends can marry. AND that my priest supports gay marriage and voted in favour of allowing our church to bless their unions.
Ami-I apologize if I open a big can of worms all over your comment forum.
No, it's okay, Jennifer. That's what the comments are for.
ReplyDeleteSirdar, where have I put anyone who does not share my opinion down?
The only place I came close is asking why you (generic you) are reading here if you don't think like I do. A serious question, as I don't know why anyone would read my blog if my opinions and thoughts are abhorrent to them.
hmm seems you have stirred some controversy. oh well. i dont have time to worry that much about those types of things. i have a chubby baby to worry about. but i do have relatives that had a ceremony, i'm not sure what you call it, but they have lived together a long time, and it doesnt seem odd at all. not to me.
ReplyDeleteI SIGNED over at Jason's blog..
ReplyDeleteSirdar, PLEASE GO READ YOUR BIBLE AGAIN! God is love.
Lets get one thing out of the way...I'm not religious. Yes I could bring up the biblical references, but it appears that wouldn't be popular. Yes the bible does say "God is Love", but it also 'says' things in there that go a lot deeper. Read the old testament and I would question the love part too. But, that is a moot point for this conversation and I've learnt that getting into a religious debate is a no-win situation for either side.
ReplyDeleteAmi: What made me think that you were putting people down if they didn't agree with you was the "...how is it your business?" paragraph. I was just turning it around...thats all. Perhaps I read more than what was meant. Sorry if that was the case. Oh, and one post that I have an opinion on doesn't mean I don't like what you say every time. Thus, I come back and have for some time. If you don't want me to come back because I had a comment like I made, well, just say so and I will respect your wishes. If not, I will keep coming back like I have for the past few years.
Jenny: The leap from Gay Marriage to Polygamy is because the polygamists in Bountiful, BC are using the same charter right to defend polygamy in Canada. Do a Google search for the words polygamy canada and you will see that it is in the courts. And as for the religious people comment, that is one of the reasons I am not a Christian. I tried reading and trying to understand, but there is so much in there that bothered me that I made a decision that it is not what I want. Not only is there polygamy in the bible there is incest, murder, and the like that I don't agree with. The homosexual issue is in there too. Some chose to take it literally, some chose to take it liberally. How someone looks at it is fine by me.
Sabrina: Yes the bible does say God is Love. It also says a lot that isn't lovely. I have read my bible. Thanks for the suggestion.
Oh and if you re-read my comment I do say that I used to be set against gay marriage and I'm not so much anymore. Thus, if a gay or a lesbian couple want to get married, go for it.
Have a nice day!!
You're more than welcome to read here, Sirdar.
ReplyDeleteI just didn't see my question 'how is it your business?' as putting anyone down.
And this is a particularly tough issue for me, since I have a family member who I adore that has been ostracized by many other family members because of sexual orientation. It's been heartbreaking for this family member and partner, and has caused so much hurt and anger and fighting in a large portion of our family.
Many members of our family do not agree with me, so I have refused to discuss the issue with them anymore.
And anywhere that family member is not welcome is also a place where I will not go or allow my kids to go.
I was not offended by your question/comment.
Please feel free to continue to read/comment.
You can even disagree with me, even though if you're not in agreement, you're the one who's wrong. ;)
Thanks Ami. I'll gladly stick around. Sorry to hear about the family not accepting your family member. It must be tough.
ReplyDeleteI completely support this. Love is love. I feel like this goes back to arranged marriages. No one should have a say in love but those who are doing the loving. Love is in the soul, and no one else decides those decisions.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you phrased this. Perhaps this will get more closed minds, to start getting curious and to look into the truth.
A brilliant post. Well Said!
