Well shit.

I was driving to work today.
It's funny, I've been avoiding a particular intersection for awhile, it always seems to be a little crazy, the left turn light is short, so if you're not the first or second car in line, sometimes the light changes on you and you have to sit through another full cycle of the light.

The traffic flowing the other way is not 'short', though, it's an extra LONG time. Frustrating.

So I've been turning off early. I did today, too. As I did it, I said to myself, 'now watch, this will be the day I should not have gone down this street'.

I should have told myself earlier.

As I was approaching an intersection, I saw a vehicle on my right preparing to turn into my lane.
And I knew it.
I fucking knew it
.
I was right. I did not get all the way past her before she pulled out. I hit the gas and swerved toward the center to try to get out of her way, but not enough.

WHAM.

I felt the seatbelt lock up at the same time I hit my head on the doorframe. I have noticed this evening that I apparently hit my shoulder, too. And my neck seems to be made of some kind of hot wires that don't stretch very well.

So I stopped. We did the stuff you do. She thought *I* had hit her at first. She was pretty shaken up. But it's difficult for me to have been the one to have caused the accident when the damage is on the front of her car and the right rear of mine.

I almost got past her and none of that would have happened. I would also have made it to work instead of spending the afternoon making phone calls and seeing my doctor.

She figured it out. She was kind. She works at the business (ha! A car repair shop... although they do engines, not body work) that she was pulling out from. She got her information for me, and I sat in my car waiting for my husband and a tow truck. She came out to my car three or four times to make sure I was okay and apologized to me.

I told her that shit happens and that we'd get it figured out. It's not like she meant to do it. She's not stupid and wasn't being an asshole, there was no reason for me to be angry with her.

So my doctor checked me out. I don't have a concussion, I didn't break any bones and as far as fender benders go, it wasn't as bad as it could have been. She gave me a prescription for a muscle relaxant but it wasn't ready this evening so I guess I'll  be sleepin' without it. That's okay, I have other things I can take. I don't feel too bad. A little stiff.

My car is at a body shop. I don't know the damages yet. It's a Toyota, so they hold their value pretty well, I hope the insurance doesn't want to total it, that's a pain in the ass I don't need to deal with.

I will be off work tomorrow. Pretty sure I'm not going to feel better than I do this evening. And the rental place won't have a car for me until Friday.

I'm letting my insurance handle all of it and pay for everything, then they can get the money from HER insurance. I had an accident back in 1995 (also not my fault and I'm still pissed off about that one) and mistakenly thought since it wasn't my fault it should not be my insurance company's problem. What a clusterfuck. I won't make that mistake again.

So my insurance will cover everything and I'll be back on the road one way or another pretty soon.

::sigh::

  1. There's no worse feeling than that moment right after the "WHAM".

    1. Ughhh... you're right. The bump on my head did not help with clarity in thinking, either. But, no concussion and nothing horrible happened. We were both okay, more or less, and life goes on. She just didn't see me. I don't know why, but if every time I'd messed up behind the wheel an accident had happened, there would be a few. Just one of those things.

  2. I'm glad you are okay for the most part. Pot is legal in Oregon, that's a good pain reliever. I hope this all works out quickly and smoothly. Just glad you are okay!

    1. I would LOVE to be able to partake, as I really enjoy the buzz. However, in my line of work, it isn't legal. I'm okay, I have some actual pain relievers that I can take if I need them and I'm doing okay this morning. I have a headache and my neck is stiff but I think I'll be fine. Her insurance company is trying to weasel out, but it doesn't matter as my insurance will cover it all and it won't be my problem. She called to check on me this morning. She's very apologetic. I assured her that I'm not angry at her, and told her that if I had an accident every time I had a brain fart behind the wheel I'd have been involved in several by now. Stuff just happens. She didn't mean to do it.
