I hung one more year on the line...
From Have A Good Time by Paul Simon.
Poor Paul. Same tortured/angry/frustrated artist crap that so many other musical geniuses have gone through. He has written some really great songs, though. One of my favorites to listen to.
It really was my birthday yesterday as I write this, but it's not posting until the 14th.
My birthday was on the 11th. As it always is. Two weeks before Christmas.
When I was growing up, it always felt like my birthday sort of disappeared because of the holidaze.
Now I wish my birthday would disappear. Ha.
Not getting any younger. I don't suppose anyone is.
I don't feel upset or anything, though. It's just another birthday in a long string of 'em.
Had a discussion with 'my' kids a few years ago about birthdays. I may have even mentioned it here.
James and Hayden were lamenting that it was a WHOLE YEAR between their birthdays and that it seemed to take forever to get to their next birthday. I told them that mine seemed to come faster and faster.
We decided that a year for them was one sixth of their lives, but for me, one fifty-eighth. Hence the feeling of shorter time between birthdays.
Makes sense, doesn't it?
I turned 60 yesterday.
Funny, when I think of my birthday, what each birthday since 1978 really marks for me is the amount of time since I met my guy.
I met Eric 42 years ago yesterday.
It was my 18th birthday.
He walked into one of my classes with some papers for the teacher.
He was the best looking guy I'd ever seen. I was immediately smitten.
I turned to Steve Klingenberg, the guy next to me, and said, "OH MY GOD! Who is that?"
He shrugged and said, annoyed, "How the hell should I know?"
Which was funny. I laughed.
Eric told me that he was pretty taken with me as well on that day.
We both clearly remember our first meeting.
We just celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary.
Time flies like an arrow... fruit flies like a banana.
::snort::
I had to go to the DMV (open for appointments only right now) and renew my license. I had an appointment for 2:50 PM, but arrived about 25 minutes early. Not a great idea, but the rest of the delay wasn't really my fault.
Apparently they're as efficient as other government entities, and they'd scheduled everyone's break at 2:45. Everyone except the door guard/greeter, the photographer and ONE clerk.
There were 20 people waiting indoors and six lined up outside by the time the line started moving again.
Found
a chair in the lobby and wished I'd brought a book.
I'm not one to take out my phone and play, so I was a little bored.
But I like people watching. One thing about the DMV, at least every time that I've been? There are usually some interesting people to watch.

But I like people watching. One thing about the DMV, at least every time that I've been? There are usually some interesting people to watch.
This
time was no exception. My nearest neighbors were a teenage girl
and her dad. She was taking her driving test for the second time,
having failed at her first attempt a few weeks ago. She was cheerful
about it, they discussed things for her to watch for and sounded pretty
positive.
While
we were waiting, a gentleman was dropped off by the big glass doors.
He had a white cane and no eyes.
There were just two dry holes where his eyes should have been.
He did not wear glasses to cover it.

He was escorted in by the lady who was stationed at the door, she took him over to the service desk. She explained
to the lady at the counter that he was there to be photographed for a state-issued ID card.
While she was explaining that to the lady at the counter, the teen girl and her dad were still deep in conversation. The teenager hadn't noticed the gentleman at all.
So I did have to wait awhile, but to be fair, I showed up nearly half an hour early. So if you deduct those 30 minutes and know that I was out of there at about 3:20, I only had to spend half an hour total.
Oh, and 70 bucks.

He was escorted past the area where we were seated, and the girl suddenly stopped talking with her dad to watch his progress.
The
blind man went to the photo area on the other side of the lobby and the
girl turned to her dad. In an incredulous tone, she said, "How does he
get a driver's license???!!"
I had to look down into my lap and act like I didn't hear her, I didn't want to snort or laugh loudly.
But it did crack me up.So I did have to wait awhile, but to be fair, I showed up nearly half an hour early. So if you deduct those 30 minutes and know that I was out of there at about 3:20, I only had to spend half an hour total.

Happy belated birthday! They do come along quick these days *sigh*
ReplyDeleteOh man, a thousand MPH!!
DeleteThanks for the birthday wishes. :)
Happy Belated Birthday! I hope you had cake and were very much spoiled!
ReplyDeleteLyssa baked me a cake, Eric bbq-d a steak for me. It was a good day. :)
DeleteHappy birthday! Ok, so it was a few days ago, but in the course of a year....
ReplyDelete60 is not so bad these days, I hit that milestone 5 years ago. I don't like the count down, but I am enjoying the earthly journey regardless.
I don't feel sad or upset at the number, but I'm a bit... staggered. 'Cause MAN that went by fast!!!
DeleteHappy Birthday. Happy wedding anniversary. I hate going to the DMV but it is good for people watching.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the DMV isn't my favorite place. With the exorbitant prices we have to pay for every 'service' I hate it even more!!
Delete60? You're just a kid! Speaking of kids, you should have told the kid when the blind guy gets his licence he can only drive in the blind lane.
ReplyDeleteI should have told her that's why they have braille on the drive up at the bank. Haha.
DeleteI'm not a kid. I would LIKE to be a kid again. But with the brains I have now.
Belated Happy Birthday! I'll hit 62 (and retirement) Friday.
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain with the disappearing birthday. Ever get birthday presents in Christmas paper?
Well! Happy Birthday and Retirement!
DeleteYes on the birthday gifts wrapped in Christmas paper.
Also, my mom always said, "Your birthday is so close to Christmas, we'll get you a BIG present."
And then, it was always something lame. Used to piss me off, but it was really just that my parents always had too much month at the end of the money and couldn't afford gifts for us.
First off, Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary! And, honestly, when you began the Story of the Eyeless Guy I thought you were gonna say he was there to get a Driver's License!? So what the Girl said mirrored my Thoughts and that made me Smile all the more. The Funny thing to me is that on every Drive-Up ATM they have Braille and I wonder... WHY? It is on the Driver's Side and if someone needs Braille and is going thru the Drive-Thru ATM then I'm assuming they are Driving a Vehicle, No? Anyway, one of those things that makes you go Humnnnn... One of my Granddaughters has a Birthday Dec. 13th and another on Dec. 27th and I think they get kinda robbed of the Joy of Two Separate Celebrations... they are Sisters too and another Sister of theirs has hers on January 4th... so it really hits my wallet hard right at the Holidays! Ouch! Told that Daughter she should have spaced them Kids out further. *winks*
ReplyDeleteThanks!!
DeleteI always wondered about the braille on drive up banks, but no one has ever volunteered to enlighten me. Half a moment while I look it up.
Okay. Two schools of thought here...
ATM producers make keypads with Braille dots for their walk-up machines anyway, it is cheaper just to make all machines the same way. The alternative, after all, would be to hold two separate inventories and make sure that each machine went to the right destination.
OR
while it may initially seem pointless to have Braille on drive-thru ATMs, the machines actually can be and are used by blind people. A driver with a blind passenger in the back seat would just have to pull slightly ahead to allow their passenger to reach the ATM and make a transaction.
I don't know.
I used to be so depressed over having to share my birthday with a worldwide holiday. Now, I really don't care.
One of my brothers has a November 5th birthday. ONE time my mom combined our birthdays into a big party. I was in 3rd grade, Jim was in K.
Hated that, too.
We have ONE drop off location here, but I will say it's not terrible. You text a code to the number and you get your place in line. Wait in your car. They text you to come in. There's maybe 3 people in there with you. I've had to do two major things this way since covid and I think the longest wait was 40 minutes. Not too bad, but the 45 minute drive to the one place is killer, particularly since our local dmv is 15 minutes away. Happiest of Birthdays my friend. Youngest is just 12 weeks from his 19th. I broke the news he's going to have to start paying rent...
ReplyDeleteMy life was less complicated as a renter. But I couldn't paint the bathroom or tear out the ugly shrubs in the front yard.
DeleteI hope I won't have to go back to the DMV for awhile, my new license is good for eight years.
The birthdays do come faster, the more of them we have. I'm OK with being 76, but a while back it occurred to me that in four years, I'll be 80. WHAT???
ReplyDelete80 sounds much older than 70 did. Of course, at this point, getting older is a good thing compared to the alternative. But a time may come when it isn't such a good thing any more.
My mom (she's 81) was kinda freaking out that her oldest child is 60. Mom isn't doing so well, though. She's caring for my dad full time and not taking the time to care for herself as much as she should. Neither one will consider assisted living, so I guess things aren't going to improve a great deal.
DeleteThanks a bunch for stopping by and leaving me a comment, I'm heading over to your blog now.
