Well.
I got the medical equivalent of 'I'm sorry you feel that way'.
She was 'sorry you didn't feel heard'.
To
which I answered, "No, I didn't 'feel' that way, that was exactly what
happened. I wasn't listened to here at the clinic or in the ER. No one
gave a shit about what was going on, no one called me to see how I was
later, no one seemed to understand the meaning of a medical emergency.
Those aren't feelings, those are facts."
She wanted to know why I think my BP is down, why I haven't had so many migraines, why I'm feeling so much better.
Um, really?
So
I told her I'm pretty sure the heartburn medication I was taking wasn't
good for me. I said that was the first example of not being listened
to.
I told her a little about the hospital visits and told her
about my efforts to get someone to listen to me at the clinic while she
was on vacation. I think she believes that since she wasn't there it had
very little to do with her, but that's not true. She was the very first
one to refuse to listen to me or consider that the heartburn medication
was causing me problems.
I have a reputation for being good with
words, and if you only know me from here, it's understandable for you
to think that way. I write, I edit, I change things, I write and edit some more. I mess with it until it says exactly what I wanted to say.
There are times I come back a week later and fix something.
Occasionally an error gets past me and I have to fix that, too.
So I have control over writing, and can take as long as I want to.
Not the same in a personal conversation.
Dammit.
When
I'm in the middle of a situation, it's hard for me to think quickly
enough to have answers ready, sadly. Most people will say the same, when
they look back at an event they say, "Oh I should have said _____." Or,
"Why didn't I tell her ______?"
I managed to say a little, but not enough.
I just didn't have it in me today.
It
didn't help that the early morning hours (3 to 6-ish) were filled with a
huge thunderstorm, complete with flash after flash of lightning. I
couldn't stay asleep longer than a few minutes, and when Eric got up to
go to the bathroom, I woke up again.
So like 8 times in a 2 hour period. After not managing to fall asleep until close to midnight.
Ugh.
A
large part of the problem with Providence is what they expect of the
people who work there, from custodial staff all the way to doctors. They
expect them to do more than is reasonable and instead of improving the
situation by adding more staff they're nasty to people who can't
complete all the work that's expected of them and they get discouraged
and they quit.
Not only did I lose Dr. Dirtball, but more than
one friend/acquaintance couldn't take the BS anymore and left. I've
known at least five through my work (parents of my kids) who had a whole
lot to say about Providence and the working conditions.
I could have said a lot more, but I'm okay with how things ended up.
My prescription is filled, I have an appointment with a different doctor in a few weeks and I'll see if I like her.
Visited the Urologist yesterday. He listened, I listened. I didn't like what I was hearing but that means I was wrong. The verdamit Cheyenne VA haven't replaced the only Urologist on staff when he retired. I think the guy I see is competent. I need to make a decision, soon.
ReplyDeleteI hope you're okay. Another reminder that behind the words there are actual people out there. :)
DeleteI have military family and the VA can very often just be nothin' but shit. My brother has found a GREAT doc through the VA but he's retiring (my brother is) and will be moving cross country... has to find new care. Ugh.
"Not the same in a personal conversation."
ReplyDeleteThat's an understatement for me. And even if you write yourself notes, you have to be ready to explain your note in detail so that it makes sense. You can always tell when your 15 minutes is about up with a doctor. Things start moving along really fast.
I will say that my doctor takes whatever time is necessary. But I don't think she really cares all that much about me. I'm sure a level of professional reserve is necessary to keep from becoming too emotionally involved.
DeleteShe said and did nothing to change my mind about moving to a new clinic/new doctor, though. I plan to keep the appointment.
Oh, how I relate to your statement about words on paper and words that come out of my mouth! Haha
ReplyDeleteAt least you could look her in the eye and let her know that they didn't hold up their end of the bargain.....small comfort, I'm sure. I hope your new doctor is a good one.
I let her know what I thought. Here's another thing, though. When I'm deeply involved with something, I'm passionate about something... I sometimes can't control tears. And although I don't believe tears are a sign of weakness, I feel like when I display them, I'm looking weak. So really getting into the conversation and becoming angry or upset would have caused me to cry. So I didn't.
DeleteI have heard good things about the doctor I'm going to see, but I don't know if any Providence doctor is allowed to be good.
Sort of off topic, but what do you do about your heartburn now?? I take the same thing you did, and I suffer if I don't take it. I'd love to find something that works that doesn't cause long term effects.
ReplyDeleteIt was a VERY rough four weeks getting the medication out of my system. In a couple internet searches, I learned that the effects of trying to stop omeprazole are so difficult that half the people who try give up and just keep taking it.
DeleteI had anxiety (although who knows how much of it was omeprazole?A lot, according to some) my digestion was slow and then it got very fast... finally have achieved balance. I had a lot more heartburn than I knew what to do with and ended up sleeping sitting up for several nights.
One of the doctor-written articles out there said that his patients who were trying to get off the stuff said it took from 10 to 25 days for things to stop being so crazy.
I'm very sorry I ever took it.
After things evened out, I crunch up fruity flavored tums knockoffs and take generic pepcid as needed. I'm down to once a day with that stuff now.
There's definitely no denying that stopping the omeprazole stopped the BP issues.
I think, generally, those of us here write better than we speak. I also struggle with what I should have said.
ReplyDeleteNot the same, but I can't tell you how frustrating it is to get the phone calls from "case management" about Youngest's stent in the nut house (his words). They literally sent him home with a dose of medication that's not effective for his weight/height yet (it has to be done slowly) into the same stress and to the same "friends" that accelerated the issues before. WITH LITERALLY NO SUPPORT STAFF. Yes, his therapist can see him on Wednesday, but that's because we already had her. The med doctor... at least 3 weeks out, AND they can't even input him because of computer errors. And I looked into another center, but this one actually came recommended by a friend so I'm giving them til the end of the day Monday. Seriously... this low is literally life threatening and I'm being left to just deal with it??? What the actual F? At the end of the conversation she says to me... is there anything else I can suggest? Um, no. These people fucked this whole situation up and it will take years to fix. So no thanks, apparently I got this one.
So not the same, but so frustrating.
There has to be a state regulatory board or someone in charge. As they say, shit rolls downhill. Call 'em up and give 'em some shit!!
DeleteI'm so sorry that this is what your life is right now.
It's a lot. And not fair.
I actually got in touch with them today. She's trying to squeeze him in tomorrow or Thursday. And she assures me that the NP can get him through until the meds are able to be at a high enough dose to be effective, and then he can come off the other. Fingers crossed.
DeleteIf he was an alcoholic or a heroin addict he'd have gone to rehab right after. But you know, since he's "manageable" and has a safe place to be, the system just kind of throws him to the wolves.
We will be okay. He has A TON of support. And I think he's on the upswing for a bit. Got up at 7 am to talk to someone about a job and everything, lost all motivation after that, but it's a start.
I'm so glad things look a little better. I've been thinking of you.
