I work with a broad cross section of humanity.
All women at this point, although we've had a few guys on our team in the past.
We're all very different as individuals. It's interesting to me when I stop to really ponder it.
We have a couple grandmothers, more than a few 20 something college students, some mid-30s housewives and at least one gimpy 54 year old.
Different families, too.
Single moms raising children, married man/woman couples, single, unencumbered individuals, empty nesters.
None of us socialize outside of work. The only thing we have in common is our jobs. I like everyone just fine, but we don't spend any time together when we're not required to. That works for me very well. I have had jobs in the past where the staff really was like one big family, but the way we're set up, we just don't spend time getting to know one another. We're all on our own little islands for a majority of the time.
Yesterday afternoon I was asked by one of the grandmas, "What do you think about the new Supreme Court ruling?"
From her disapproving tone, I knew which case she was referring to.
"Well, I don't really care, actually. I think it's fine."
"Hmph. It's certainly not a lifestyle *I* approve of! I mean, I guess it's their business, but I don't understand it."
Ha. As if they need your approval!!
She had asked me what I thought. I decided to tell her.
"As far as I'm concerned, anyone who doesn't accept my entire family, regardless of their orientation, can kiss my ass. Excuse me, will you?"
I walked over to where a couple boys were once again stealing the money from the cash register while the girls had their backs turned and dealt with the situation.
She figured out all by herself that topic was over. :)
One of my coworkers is gay, she lives with her partner. Between them, they have three kids. Grandma still hasn't figured it out, although the coworker takes all three kids with her when she leaves every day.
I am glad to see her in a relationship. She's been lonely a long time.
I ask, in all honesty, how does that affect you, personally? Generic you, of course... since the people who read here have open minds and open hearts.
How does someone's love change yours? Threaten your marriage? Contribute to the downfall of our country?
We'd be a lot better off in our country if people would just butt out when it's not their concern.
And now that we've opened the door to finally realizing religious institutions have no fucking business in government, how about them starting to pay taxes?
It would be interesting if Grandma asked that coworker! At,least none of the kids especially that lady's didn't hear. Not that they need o be sheltered but that sort of attitude wouldn't be very beneficial. Personally, people are people and they deserve to be happy.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Grandma will eventually puzzle it out. She isn't stupid, but sometimes it takes her awhile to get to the same conclusion everyone else arrived at about a week ago. :)
ReplyDeleteThe kids at work have discussed gay marriage more than once, we have many different kinds of families and caregivers. Most of the children are very matter-of-fact about adoption, gay marriage, skin color, gender identity... name your controversy, we've probably discussed it. Oh, and religion and Santa and the Easter Bunny, too.
and yes... happy.. it's just love. Nothing to fear.
I am continually amazed (and I shouldn't be) that some people have such narrow closed minds. If it does not effect you, why in the world should you care what other people do? It makes no difference to me who you/they/he/she love. As long as they are happy that is what matters.
ReplyDeleteThe argument 'gay marriage is bad because GOD' seems to be the only one they have. And if you're having a cow because GOD, then you should have a long, long list of other things that aren't okay because GOD. If you don't, then you're a hypocrite. Like my brother Dick and his wife, Snatchie. Hypocrites.
DeleteIt is jealousy. The probability "gay" are having more sex than them. Yes. cue up the sarcasm font. I don't care what consenting adults do so long as they don't drag me into their drama. I do care how they treat others. Something along the lines of, "The content of their character".
ReplyDeleteYes. And that sums up my religious creed, basically.
DeleteTry not to be an asshole.
And consenting adults.
That means a dog or a horse or the rocks in the front yard can't sign a marriage license. So those stupid arguments against love aren't valid.
We'd all be better off if people like Grandma took care of their own business. I'm willing to bet she won't raise the issue with me again, however. :-D
