FIVE

Five years ago this week I stopped drinking soda.

To some people, that's not a big deal, they can take it or leave it.
Sadly, I could not. I had to drink it all the time. I gave up the sugary soda a few years before that and switched to earwax, er Diet Pepsi. I knew that the diet variety was even more just a chemistry set in a bottle, but mostly I tried not to care. Addiction, even when it's just soda... is still addiction.

I have been tempted a couple times to drink soda. I actually poured about an inch of root beer into a cup when we had our little pizza party at work on January 24th and drank it.

Right away I wanted more, which of course tells me that it's better for me to have NONE.

Anyway, no more of that crap.

I thought it was worth mentioning that I've managed to be off that crap for five years, as it was a huge thing for me and very difficult to stop doing it.

Now if I could get off sugar.

::sigh::

  1. WOW five years! Good for you!! I'm not much of a soda drinker, but do like a cold glass of sprite once in a while.

    1. I have learned that I can't take it or leave it. One little bit is enough to wake up the craving monster again. Yesterday at the grocery store I really, really wanted to buy some root beer. And my little taste (seriously, two swallows of it) on January 24th is the reason. Much better off just saying NO NO NO.

  2. I can totally understand where you're coming from on the addiction to soda and sugar. Congratulations on making five years soda free.

    1. Thanks! If you knew how much I used to drink, and how I couldn't get through the day without it, you'd be impressed. Or you should be. ;)

  3. Congrats to you.
I drink Tab and usually have one can a day now. Down from three,I might add.
I cut back so that ,I don't have to wake to pee so often during the night. It's Hell to get old. I shit you not! ;0)

    1. I used to drink Tab, but found Diet Pepsi was less like earwax and more fizzy.
I have to get up and pee during the night when my hormones are gearing up, but usually can sleep eight hours without having to get up. Unless Eric gets up. Then it wakes me up and I say to myself, "Well, as long as I'm up I may as well pee."

  4. A-MAZ-ING!!!! Five years with no soda?!? I take my hat off to you. Not sure I could do and doubt I'd ever have the nerve to try.
    Very impressive.

    1. It was giving me migraines. I knew it was and did not want to admit it because then I'd have to stop drinking it.

Thing is, I seem to be missing the 'off' button and easily become addicted to things. It's really tough sometimes. Ah well.

  5. Congrats! It is difficult and it does make a difference. Hoping you are drinking more water now. Or coffee. Or Jack Daniels...opps, I think I'm getting off topic. Sorry.

    1. Ha. More water. Some chocolate milk. (Although watching MIB3 tells me that I may be temporally dislocated when I'm craving chocolate milk, so perhaps that one can be explained) and no Jack. :) I don't drink coffee, either.

You can take a big mug, fill it with milk and chocolate and sugar, heat it up and then add ONE DROP of coffee. And you will have RUINED a perfectly good cup of hot cocoa. :)

  6. My ex has always been a soda junkie, like a quart a day or more junkie. She also has serious health problems. May sound cold but I'm damn glad I don't have her medical bills anymore.

    1. I don't think it sounds cold, it sounds pragmatic. If you were still in love, then saying that would make you sound like an asshole, but since she is your ex, and usually that means people don't like each other much... well, why shouldn't you be glad you don't have her bills?

  7. Five years is excellent. I go through periods of months at a time where I don't touch it, then I have to have just. one. more.

But I can leave it afterwards. I usually end up with a migraine since that is the only caffeine I have aside from an occasional hot chocolate.

    1. I can't walk away from it. It's so much easier on me to just admit I have no control. :(

  8. I totally get it and commend you for 5 years! I have tried to quit and just can't. The only time I've been able to quit was when we planned to have a kid. I quit for a period of 3 months before we planned to conceive, then stayed off it while pregnant and for the two years I breastfed my kiddo. Over 3 years. And the second I had it again, after the three years, I just totally fell off the wagon and couldn't get back on. LOL I've drank buckets of the stuff most of my life. Sigh.

    1. What's funny (ironic?) is that with kid #1 I drank a BUNCH of soda, Pepsi was my drug of choice. With baby #2, carbonated beverages were just not an option. They didn't make me sick, but it was like suggesting I drink a tablecloth. Just did not make sense, there was absolutely NO appeal. The same thing happened with potatoes. Weird.
