Migraines and the Evils of Weevils

I'm trying to decide which one was worse, the headache in my head or the headache of getting rid of a bug infestation.

For a couple weeks, these little itty bitty beetles have been landing on our dish drying area. Not millions of them, just a few. Eric thought they were somehow coming from the wood of the cupboard and kept planning to figure it out, but wasn't too worried, there were only a few, like I said.

I wasn't sufficiently motivated to worry about it until a bunch more showed up, then on Friday, I got a pan from the drainer to boil some macaroni and there were two grubs in it. Larvae.

Ick.

So Sunday Eric climbed up on a chair and on the counter and started taking things out of the cupboard.

Evidently weevils like oatmeal. They also have an affinity for chili powder in cellophane bags. They reproduce asexually, so you don't have to have a place for them to meet and greet, either. No little Weevil singles bar... they're all single and hot to trot.

So after vacuuming and cleaning and replacing the contents of the cupboard, we have only seen a couple. I think they probably hid in a crack somewhere and came out because someone stole their cereal.

I'm hopeful that we've seen the last of them.

Of course you realize that they don't just spontaneously materialize in your cupboard, instead hatching from eggs that are already present in your cereal, your sauce mix, your flour.

Doesn't that make you hungry?

Yeah, me too. Not that I've had a whole lot of appetite this weekend. Been sidelined (again) with the migraine, but seem to be on the downhill side of it. Appetite is back today (Sunday) and I managed to eat two meals and keep them down. This is definite progress.

I'm thinking though, that finding bugs in my cupboard might be an effective appetite suppressant. Made my skin crawl, anyway.

So now I am off to do the dishes, toss still another load of clothes into the dryer, and set my alarm for 5. This is the last week of school.

Wow.

  1. First of all...YUCK! At first I thought you meant cute little ladybugs because we had those this spring, but that is just nasty. Humorously told, but nasty nonetheless! The worse part is that the eggs are there all along!

Sorry about your migraine. I have had some headaches lately and I usually don't any longer.

I remember your school goes much longer than ours. PS here get out the week before Memorial Day. When do y'all start back? September?

Thank you Ami for all the support about Pippi. It made Keilee so happy to have a comment from you. She still reads and does things from the books you sent. She always says,'My books from Ami". :)

    1. We go back right after Labor Day in September. I don't think it makes any difference when the school schedule is arranged, after the state tests are over it's nothing but play anyway. They could really use more of it, I think. But they didn't consult me.

I'm glad the books are still being used. :) Pass 'em on when you can. Best thing to do, I think.

  2. I hate bug invasions, the worst was a flea one brought in by my old dog. Bug spray cans never work that well

    1. My poor old dog was allergic to fleas. Glad we only had a couple times with that... smeared on the Frontline and the fleas disappeared.

I can't use sprays, they are bad for your fish tanks. And not so great for people to breathe, either,

    1. So many reasons that I've visited the South but could never live there... bugs are only a million of the reasons. :)

      Headache seems to be... better?

  5. I found out a long time ago to keep my oatmeal, flour and pancake mix in the refrigerator. My SIL is a missionary in Argentina, and they keep anything with a grain in it in the freezer. Of course, a few bugs aren't going to hurt us.

I hope your migraine is gone. Love your descriptions and antics of the kids!

    1. I usually keep mine in the freezer but for some reason the oats were in the waaaay back of the cupboard. ::sigh::

And I know the bugs don't REALLY hurt us.. but I don't really want to know I'm eating them, either.

      So shhhhh.

  6. Just read Linda's comment. Refrigeration helps? I keep my dry mixes in ziploc bags besides their own boxes.

    1. Refrigeration keeps the eggs from hatching, basically.

But if you have stuff like cornbread mix or you're baking bread, let it get to room temp before you use it.

  7. So sorry you're struggling with the migraine monster again, but I'm really glad it was only weevils. It could have been roaches! :::shudder:::

    1. I hate to say the monster has been vanquished, because it always comes back and bites me in the ass... but I think....

  8. Refrigeration does help. We don't eat too much oatmeal, but I like to keep it on hand, and haven't ever had a bug in it since it is in the refrigerator.

    1. I won't make the oatmeal mistake again.

  9. Been there, done that... thankfully not lately. I keep most anything like that in the fridge, or in tightly sealed containers, however, that doesn't stop them from being brought in from the store!

    1. During 'please bug me' week at school I talked to the kids about the fact that we ALL eat bugs... all the time.

      They didn't believe me.

I should have saved some weevils for them.
      lol
