Lots of buzz out there about Tim Tebow, who wears a Bible verse on his face for photo ops on football game day. Not that I care, although I've always thought it would be funny to go to a church service and hold up signs like 'Go Buccaneers!' or maybe 'Joe's Bar'.
But the verse doesn't bother me. What bugs the crap out of me is the assumption he makes (and he's not the only sports guy) that somehow his God cares about the outcome of his game. That praying and holding up a finger (no, not the one I usually hold up) in an attempt to give the credit to God just makes me want to laugh/hurl/scream/pick an action.
First of all, seriously? What if there's a Christian guy on the OTHER team who also gives the glory to God? And his team loses. Does that mean God favors the other team? That God cares about sports? That your touchdown is important to him? Or your home run?
And does his concern extend to funding your new stadium? Ending the lockout so your team can play basketball? Maybe he wants to micromanage who makes your shoes, too? Maybe your prayers are the reason the sneaker company is exploiting their workers overseas?
I don't know.
But I am offended by the grandstanding and saluting God for something that, if he exists, probably doesn't give a shit about.
And one more thing. When someone draws attention to himself by saying "WOW! LOOK HOW HUMBLE I AM!!" I pretty much think the opposite.
I don't even know who that is. Can you tell I don't watch sports?
ReplyDeleteI think Jesus would sit down and pop a beer and root for whoever I'm rooting for. He's there with all the players, but no, I don't think he always answers every prayer. Obviously, both teams can't win, or there would be a draw every time, right? Sometimes, though? I really want to hope he's a Bears fan. Just 'cause. :-)

ReplyDeleteI am a christian ,but I do not subscribe the that type of grandstanding , frankly I doubt football is at the top of anyones priorty list aside from those who make money off of it . While there is nothing wrong with faith and proclaiming said faith , that type of ting is just crap

I believe in God but I don't think football is high on His list! However, I have always liked Tebow, he was homeschooled ya know. I don't watch him enough to know how he acts or to know if he is grandstanding. I always thought people that did that was like saying, "Hey God, thanks for the skills you have given me".... And I think they are people in Alabama who would disagree that God doesn't care about football.Good grief these people are football crazy. :)
