Do you celebrate?

Eric and I don't exchange gifts.

Not birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas... we figure we both have everything we need/want.

I don't buy into the whole 'give me jewelry and flowers and prove you love me' commercialism of Valentine's day or any other big commercial holiday, either.

I think it's demeaning to women in general to follow the suggestions all over the television and the radio that a man must prove his love by buying gifts. (and why is it that the ads are about a guy giving stuff to a girl... not the other way 'round? The whole enterprise feels highly suspicious to me.)

I'm not a very good consumer, am I?
So V-day is sort of, well, not all that important to me in the general scheme of things. I picked up some candy for the kids, but they don't
really care too much either.

You may recall that I recently had shoulder surgery. (yeah, I know... there may be someone in Kurdistan who does not know, otherwise the whole world does.)

And my man drove me to and from the surgery center on the day of the operation, took two days off work after the surgery, as well as checking in by calling Lyssa for updates about 5 times a day after he went back to work.

He
washed my armpits, dressed me, did my laundry, cooked meals for me, did all the grocery shopping for weeks.

There wasn't a single thing he wasn't willing to do for me then or now.

Or ever.

He has taken care of my needs above his own for more than 29 years now.

I don't need roses or candy to know exactly how much I'm loved.

And nothing I could give him would even show a fraction of how much I adore the man.
We celebrate love every day.
:)

  1. My husband tipped up his little computer thing he's working on with a screen that he programmed to say the date and he says can you see what it says and I read off, 70 degrees Feb 14th, oh hey, happy valentine's day, he says it back, we squeeze hands.

he said he'd do something for me next year. We each got each other one small gift 'from the baby' for christmas. again, next year will be different, but if it's not, oh well. he stayed home when I had surgery, put my dressings on me, took care of the baby, cooked, really, there's not much of a better way to show you love someone than take care of them when they're ill.

It's Chinese New Year. I'm having 20 some odd (very odd :-) ) people to my house. So, I'm celebrating, sort of. Happy New Year.

  4. My hubby insists on a Valentine gift for me ,and trust me I have tried talking him out of it. That said I remind him that I love him every day,and on Valentines I try to cook a special supper for him and I . Anniversary we buy something together for us , after all I married him on that day and he maried me too! so unless I percieve myself to be that special that he needs to thank me every year ,Ithink it is day we celebrate each other . Not really a big romantic am I?

  5. Here in Japan V day is for women to give gifts to men. ALL MEN! Husbands, uncles, brothers, and male co workers. They generally give chocolate.

Then on March 14 Japanese celebrate white day. This is where the men buy gifts for all the women that bought them gifts. This can be chocolate, or even undergarments. It is interesting that is for sure! As a joke last year I bought Ian chocolate, and he bought me really tacky undies that I would NEVER wear.

Normally we don't celebrate. This year he did send me flowers but that was for our anniversary/V day. If he is out to sea then he will send a card and usually flowers. I send him a card once a week. Just one of those cheap 99 cent cards. I always write something sappy in them. I have EVERY SINGLE card and letter we have written each other.

We do small things for one another on holidays. When he comes home we ALWAYS take a day to just be together cooking, and be slugs.

  6. Love is an everyday event. Orgasms are better than roses or diamonds but maybe not better than chocolate. LOL!!

    Hope your day was great!

    Hugs and love,
    T

  8. You got one of the good ones there!

We don't exchange much either. Our vacuum just died, so we said a new one was our present to ourselves. But while I was at work on Saturday, he and Violet made yummy, super-chocolately truffles for me. Much tastier than roses!

  9. It sounds like everyone celebrates a little differently.. which is good.

    :)

I stopped by Tami's house today for some footwork from my favorite chiropractor and was presented with chocolate cupcakes.

    Nice.

And I sat around all day and did very little.
I feel guilty, but it was nice, too.
