School Stuff

So the other day I posted the words from the sign that hangs on each entrance to our school building.

No Smoking
Within A
1000 feet
of school.

I found out on Monday that the exact same sign is actually district-wide!
The same grammatical error is greeting the public at the doors of every elementary school in the district. Holy cow.

Should I send an anonymous email to the district offices? Call them?
Leave it alone?

I'd be embarrassed to death if I were the originator of the message, but I'd want to fix it, too.

And also on Monday, students and teachers and parents all converged on the state capitol to lobby our legislators for
school funding . (link to KGW)

They showed footage on the news. Behind the sign-waving, chanting, marching crowd, many big yellow school buses were lined up. Now in some districts, the one I reside in included, the school board has placed a moratorium on field trips for the rest of the year, citing budget concerns.

It's expensive to put a bunch of kids on a bus and drive them somewhere, ya know.

So how come they have the funding to bus a bunch of kids from all over the state to Salem for a photo op/news footage but can't take them to the park for a picnic or to OMSI or the zoo for a field trip?

And just by the way... how come 7,000 per pupil per year spending isn't enough to educate the kids in this state?

If I were a parent with a child in the system, I'd be asking those questions at board meetings for sure.

But you know, just in our district, the superintendent makes more than a hundred grand... plus he gets a car allowance and a housing allowance and 100% insurance coverage. Because of course he can't afford a house and a car and insurance on only a hundred grand.

What a crock of shit.

School was spelled wrong on the driveway of the school where I used to work.

Something has changed about your blog. It doesn't allow me to comment signed in with my blog anymore. It tells me to go sign in, and when I do and come back, it tells me to do it again, and by then, I give up.

    I had more gumption today.

  5. Holly, I haven't changed any settings at all lately... that's weird.

You can just be anonymous if it makes it easier for you... since I love it when people comment.

    Hooray for gumption.

    :)

A red permanent marker to correct all the signs?

You know how riled up I get about school budgets, but a housing allowance? That's a new one on me. I know teachers can't possibly afford to pay a dime for their family health insurance coverage, I had that explained to me by a teacher once. I'm sure you can guess the size of the violin I played for her. Family coverage for qualified employees at my company (I don't qualify even) is $900 per month - and that's only the employee share. How these teachers manage to eat more than cat food is beyond me.

Excuse me, I have to go bang my head on the wall for a while.

  7. I know I already commented today, but I just had to drop by and tell you how freaking hilarious your comment on RegularMom's blog was.

    You're such an evil trip!

What makes it even more funny is that I know it's how you really feel. No one says things quite like you.

  8. Now that I have seen the error, I am going to admit to being a moron. I couldn't see it the other day when you posted and of course would not have fessed up to it then. Today, I.read.very.slowly.until.it.smacked.me.in.the.face. :o)
