Another change

My son has been dating the same girl for seven years. No, that's not a typo. They were 14 when they became boyfriend/girlfriend. They'd known each other for three years before that.

They were born three days apart, and geographically less than 60 miles away from each other. Her family and ours both lived in Southern California at the time. Strange coincidence.

I watched their relationship grow and appreciated the maturity they both showed. None of the games one would see in high school. They were good friends.

He was there for her when her dad died unexpectedly a few years ago, and planned a lot of his life around being able to go see her. (She lives about 40 minutes away.)

I saw things in the relationship I didn't care for, but it was not my relationship, and I reasoned that even if they ended up together forever, I was not the one who had to live with her.

This post is not meant to say bad things, though, so I won't go into details. I'll just say that 80% of the effort in the relationship came from Matt. 20% from her... when she felt like it. Otherwise, it was more 98% to 2%.

His father and I both felt that he could do better, but we didn't butt in.

She called him on Wednesday and broke up with him. Over the telephone.

Their seven year relationship is over.

He's hurt.

I don't have the right things to say to fix it, and it bothers me. I'm the mom. I'm supposed to be able to help.

I haven't been a lot of help so far.

::sigh::

  1. Ami, that's so sad. Maybe once he has time to grieve a little bit he'll meet someone that's better to him and for him.

    ((((((Ami & Matt)))))

I hope you both feel better.

  2. Oh, poor Matt. My heart goes out to him. He's such a good young man. It's definitely her loss.

Sorry you don't feel more helpful, but I imagine it's something he's just got to get through.

  3. While that is sad for Matt, I'd say it's definitely a good thing. Cuz ya gotta kiss a lot of frogs to find the right handsome price. . (or beautiful princess).

  4. Hugs to Matt. That's a tough thing to deal with at any age. He'll pull through with time and space. If he knows you are there for him when he needs you, then you are helping him more than you know.
