I took a writing class about 14 years ago. It was a once a week class. I learned about editing my work, deadlines and trying to write with a nursing toddler in the house.
(For example, did you know it doesn't work to prop one on the keyboard shelf while she's nursing, even if you're really in a hurry and MUST get something written? Toddlers wiggle a lot unless they're asleep... and that particular toddler wiggled in her sleep, too. It was like sleeping with a bag of snakes.)
I found I wrote better stuff when I *had* to get it done. Some of my favorite things were written two hours before class time.
As I sat here this morning, staring at the blank screen, I missed the days of assigned writing. It was sometimes easier to be told what to talk about. I don't really suffer from writer's block, but sometimes it takes me quite awhile to figure out what I'd like to write about.
So I wondered if anyone else would appreciate writing assignments. I have two interesting books that suggest topics to write about, and evidently more time on my hands than one person needs, considering what I have accomplished this week while I'm off from work. (Nothing.)
As I wander around people's blogs, I see Fun Monday, Wordless Wednesday... I know there's one other, but right now it escapes me.
So what would you think about Say Something Saturday?
I am technologically challenged, so it might take me a few tries to get it right, but here are the bare bones of the idea.
Check in here on Friday night for your assignment. That gives you all night long to think about it. Post it sometime before midnight on Saturday. Comment here and leave a link to the post.
Too simple? Not interested? Worth a try?
Let me know.
Sounds like FUN to me! Count me in!
ReplyDeleteI would be game!
ReplyDeleteI might try it sometimes. I am doing PhotoHunt on Saturdays right now, but sometimes I have had trouble finding the photo for the topic. I think the other thing you were thinking of was Thursday Thirteen. There is another Thursday one too, and I have seen Friday Five. I haven't seen anything like you are suggesting (other than the short story ones on writers posts) so I think it might be a big hit.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about having topics. I sometimes have a problem knowing what to write about. Which is why I have fillers like PhotoHunt and TT and Fun Monday. Lately I haven't done as many of them. If I don't have time to go read other entries, I tend not to do it (or if the assignment for Fun Monday takes too much thought). Good luck with your project, I am sure it will work great and I will join sometimes.
Frugal Friday is another one, but I've never participated in that one, because I'm poor and tend to be a little bitter sometimes - I'm afraid I would get snarky and mean. ;)
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE Say Something Saturday. Weekend days are more conducive to writing for me anyway, since the kids are likely to be out doing something than in the house disrupting my concentration.
As a person who makes her living moving from one writing assignment to another without ceasing, I understand what you are saying. One reason I don't write fiction is because when I try it, I can't think of WHAT to write about. My many assignments, on the other hand, spell out exactly what I am supposed to do (well, most of the time . . . ) Anyway, I am certainly game as well. Can't wait to see what you come up with.
ReplyDeleteI'll give it a try.

I'm interested...I'll definitely check in for the assignment. This not being school, though, I don't guarantee I'll actually do it, but you've piqued my interest.
ReplyDeleteI'm game. Count me in. ( :
ReplyDeleteWith your creativity, I'm sure it will be fabulous...no pressure. heehee
I'll give it a try.
ReplyDeleteDoes it have to be a long essay? I like to write a couple of paragraphs. . . well every time I try to write a couple of paragraphs, it turns into a few pages.
Well, anyway. I'm in!
it depends on the topic. saturday i kind of rush, or just post something really quick in the morning as that's kind of a catch up day for me and the hubby now that he's out of town for work most days (sucky) so we run errands and do fun stuff together.
ReplyDeleteof course if its something fun, i'd be more apt to do it. is there a way to get a longer time to think about it? usually for fun monday we have most of the whole week. any thoughts on that?
I may just try this Ami. Great idea.
