I'm legal!

To add to all the soul searching I've been doing lately about my obligations as a Girl Scout leader, I received a phone call last week from our local Girl Scout council. It seems that they either lost my original paperwork from over nine years ago or ??? and they didn't have a background check on file for me.

Now in my work outside the home, I work with kids. I'm registered with the state child welfare division, and had to pass a civil and criminal background check to be working with kids. Do you think GS council can accept that as proof of my ability to lead? Hell no! No wonder cookies are $3.50 a box... the girl scout council spends money just like the government!

So, to do the GSUSA background check, one of the things I have to do is provide personal references. Three of them. I sent this email to three people:


I received a call from GS council today. Evidently, with the move and the ham-fisted hired help, they have lost my records. I'm not officially a leader according to their system. According to the person who called me, I can still lead my troop. Damn, there goes my opportunity to duck out.

My OUTER child, however, must fill out new background check paperwork and have references from at least three people who are willing to testify that I am not a lunatic. Naturally, I thought of you. Your name is now on the council paperwork. Please be kind when they call you.

Well, despite the fact that sometimes I am indeed a lunatic, and all three of them have witnessed many episodes of my lunacy, I received notice today that I am once again, safe to lead Girl Scouts. I'm in the process now of finding out if council even contacted my references.

I'm legal. Go figure.
