4th of July, 1980.
We were living in Montrose, Colorado.
Eric and I drove up to Ouray to wander around and then watch the fireworks. Back then (not sure if they do it now) people sat somewhere in the valley while the fireworks were set off from the side of the mountain above. You could sit anywhere in town and watch, the view was great.
We sat on a blanket on the hood of the car and leaned against the windshield.
Had a Buick sailboat.
Can't remember what kind, half a minute while I look it up.
Ah. Electra. Big and black and super comfy.
While we watched the fireworks we started talking about what things would be like after we were married.
There was no big proposal, no fanfare. Well, unless you count the fireworks.
He bought me a ring that day.
It had a black diamond, or should say 'has'. I can't wear it now, my fingers, like the rest of me, are no longer small and elegant. It's on the chain with my family tree necklace and I wear it every day.
That was July 4th.
It wasn't even four months later that we were married.
November 1st that same year.
I had no concept of the future, or what it would look like, but I knew who I wanted to be with.
45 years went by awfully fast.

A little slice of true love on the internet. Well done.
ReplyDeleteHe's a good man. A wonderful father and husband. He's aggravating and stubborn, too. But then, so am I. He has put me first ever since we met. I'm grateful for the time we've had together.
DeleteThis is a lovely recollection.
ReplyDeleteAw, thanks. I love the guy.
DeleteHappy Anniversary. 43 years is awesome. I hope to make that!
ReplyDelete45. And thank you. :) I cannot believe that much time has passed. It's stunning.
DeleteMy Parents had a Buick Electra 225 with big Fins Headlights, Baby Blue Convertible with White Leather Interior, they Loved that Car but I think it got 5 Gallons to the Mile. *LOL and Winks* What a great Make Out Car tho' and a Nostalgic 4th of July Love Story that turned out to be the Fairy Tale, I Love hearing Happy Endings like that. Where the Princess gets her Prince and they lived Happily Ever After. Yep 45 Years Plus goes by awfully fast my Friend.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, HORRIBLE gas mileage. But it was a very nice car (a gift from my grandparents when they bought their new car they just gave it to us). We camped in it a couple times, long seats to sleep on. It was also the car we drove up into the snow to get our first Christmas tree. We got stuck. Some really nice guy came and towed us out.
Delete45 years is amazing! Happy anniversary. Ken and I made it 30 years together.
ReplyDeleteDon't let anyone tell you that 30 years isn't an amazing accomplishment. I know the two of you found each other after both of you had all kinds of obstacles before you got there. And you have an amazing daughter and grandson, too.
