They really are still funny...

This year I've had Olivia in my program. She's a little red-haired girl, freckles and pale skin. Stereotypical looks and temperament. She's that redhead you were warned about, lol.

Olivia is in Kindergarten. She's... definite. Very clear on what she expects from her age mates and not terribly patient with them when they don't do what she says the moment she says it.

Most of the other K age kids are boys. Olivia is the ringleader on the 2 days per week she attends, hands on hips, barking orders at them. Most of the time, they just do whatever she expects from them.

Today, they were playing some game on the playground that involved running from monsters and stopping at various intervals. She'd taken sidewalk chalk to various places on the blacktop and drawn a big X for each of the boys.

They'd be running from the 'monster' and she'd stop, point to an X and snap at one of the boys to, "Stand and fight!"

She had six little boys running after her, stopping on command and doing her bidding.

Then Jason kept running past his designated X. Olivia wasn't happy with him. She said, "Jason! We've no time to waste! Get back in the group! Do you think this is a GAME?????!!"

He didn't disagree, just turned around and came back. No word on whether the monsters got any of them, I had to take Ari to the bathroom and then had to let Max and his mom into the building to get his backpack. When I got back to the playground, they'd sort of wandered off to do other stuff and when we lined up to come in, no one was missing, so I'm going to go out on a lonnnnng limb here and say that the monsters fortunately didn't get any of the kids.

::snicker::

Today I got out the babies and the fake food and the kitchen stuff. I'd have it out every day, but I don't have a rug/space to get all our things out every day, so it's an event when all that stuff is out.

Olivia was telling one of the other 'parents', "Don't let your baby get next to mine, she has diabetes! I don't want my kid getting sick, I don't have time for that!"

A couple of the older kids said, "That isn't contagious!"

"My mother is a nurse," Olivia said. "I think I ought to know what's contagious!"

As usual, they looked to me to solve the issue. I get the hard questions, like 'is there a Santa Claus' or 'How does the baby get into the mom?'.

So I said that diabetes is not contagious. And when I saw her little face clouding up and looking determined, suggested Olivia ask her mom about it. Not sure if she'll remember to do it, but it was sort of funny.

I'm counting down the days (two) until I'm mostly off work for the summer. I'm exhausted, my feet are tired and although I haven't run out of patience so far, I think I could if I were to relax a bit....

How are YOU doing?

    1. I'm so happy to hear how you're doing. I have been reading everyone's blogs, just not a great commenter right now. Working through some (my god my dad was such an asshole) stuff. I had to force myself to write this post, lol.

    2. I get it. I have pretty much put my mother away, but she's been dead 4 years. She will never completely go away. Last night I had a bit of a meltdown with husband about his awful siblings (they took a cue from their mother and hate me) and how he has handled it, or rather, not handled it. I think he finally goy it after nearly half a century, but that head is pretty damn hard. There, that's my little rant, maybe it will take your mind away from you dad for a couple of minutes!

    3. Not the same thing at all, but I watched my dad fail to defend my mother against HIS mother their entire married life. My grandma was a good grandma but a terrible mother and mother in law. She was mean to Mom and Dad did NOTHING about it. Extended family was shitty to her and he did fuck all about that, too.

And my mom continues to eulogize her dead husband and I continue to try not to be mean to her, although I resent the hell out of her failure to try to stand up for her children. I know she didn't know any better and couldn't do any better, but that resentment is never going away. Today would have been his 84th birthday.

    1. She's a great little person, too. Always trying to help someone tie shoes or zip a jacket or build a LEGO creation. She also has a great laugh. Just a big, full-blown adult personality in a small body.

OMG SUMMMERRRRR BREAK!!! I am so friggin' tired!

  3. A few days ago coming out of the grocery store, a mother with a, "I'm on a mission", expression had a three to four year old girl by the hand. The girl made eye contact with me in a most flirtatious manner. I thought, Mother, you are in for interesting times.

    1. Kids are very interesting. I think some people don't really *see* them until they're a lot older, thinking of them as unformed or whatever.... but they're not. I so love what I do.
