Spring has sprung and Covid is among us.

Took me 35 minutes for the first 5 miles of my commute yesterday morning. I should have decided to stay home, there was about 3/4 inch of snow out here in my area. I counted 17 wrecks off the side of the freeway in that distance.

The roads were slick enough that the local district decided on a two hour delay, then canceled classes for the whole day. Of course I no longer work in our local district. I added those dickheads to my list of shitbags I hate a long time ago. Unprofessional. But I think they got the snow day call right.

I figured the further South I went, the less snow there'd be.

That was true, but between here and my school, there was one hell of a lot of slippery road and there were hundreds of crazy people who should have stayed home.

I was one of those crazy people. I won't do that again, though. I have contact information for the two families who use morning care, so I will be able to contact them if it happens again.

So I have a bunch of flower punches. A few for leaves. Generous friends who give me their unused scrapbook papers (card stock) and a bunch of kids who love to do crafty things.

I bought the pink, blue and yellow cotton balls in 2020 to do an art project with my kids and they closed the schools on me. Dammit. So the cotton balls have been sitting in the shed for two years.

Here's this week's fun little crafty thing.

I love projects like this one, the kids take all the supplies and just go nuts with them. I don't tell them how to do it or even make an example project, but sometimes I have to make something while they're working on their own.
Yes, I get paid to play.
It was enjoyable.

More enjoyable than cleaning up the glue spills and sweeping up Easter grass when they were finished, too. Ha.

So one of the smalls in my current afternoon program tested positive for the virus this week. The child is not showing any symptoms, but the state child care division tells us what to do.

The covid-positive child has to be excluded from the program for five days. Also excluded from the program? Any unvaccinated children in the group.

Now how the hell does that make sense? Those same kids are in the classroom and/or in school together ALL DAY LONG. Why shouldn't they be able to attend program?

The kids who are being excluded from my program are being picked up from school instead of being allowed to come play and hang out with us.

It's a change from back in January when the whole program had to be closed for a week. But it doesn't make any sense to me.

I'm counting down the weeks until I no longer have to work at that school. I haven't been unhappy there (except for the stress of having to go to a new school AGAIN and start over AGAIN) but I really want to get back to MY place.

Speaking of things that don't make sense.

I got an email from Portland Public Schools this afternoon telling me that they're considering options for masking etc and will email me NEXT week to let me know what they've figured out.

Why did they do that? Why didn't they just wait until next week and email everyone to let them know what they've decided?

Here's my official guess.
Masking will continue on school grounds until the end of this school year. Indoors, outdoors... it's a thing that will go on... it was agreed between the teacher's union and the school district.

I've been wrong before, though. So who knows? Doesn't have to make any sense, now does it?

  1. The mask mandate here was lifted. By my 9 year old grandson told us that his teacher hadn't been making any of them wear a mask at all anyway.

I love that craft idea for kids, that's cute.

    1. Here in Oregon everyone has been wearing them. People have started *not* wearing them in grocery stores etc, and looking around defiantly at everyone else, but whatever.

In school, no one takes them off except to eat.

We have a lot of fun with our little crafty things. The more open ended it is, the more I enjoy seeing what they come up with. They're endlessly creative.

  2. Our state (which is sometimes considered outside of the U.S., which is a running joke here) finally lifted the mask mandate indoors. However, some businesses and schools have opted to continue requiring masks. Although I still have to wear the mask at work, our patients don't have to. It has been such a relief to let people know it's their choice.
Love the project, and hope you post some of their creativity!

    1. I will try to get some pictures of the things they made, some of them are still drying on the table as we speak. At my site we use tacky glue only, so we don't have that issue, but since I've been whining for two months about NOT being at my site, y'all know I am using their poor excuse for glue. Elmer's school glue, which is crap and should not be legal. It's very frustrating for kids.

I have heard more than one story about people thinking New Mexico is not part of the US. How do people end up so stupid? Never mind, rhetorical question. A better one would be 'how do people manage to be halfway intelligent given the state of education in the US?'

  3. They are lifing mandates around here too but that doesn't mean I won't be wearing my mask all the damn time. My husband has some serious health issues and even vaccinated could die if he gets covid, so I try to only worry about us. I will wear them as will he. If they don't like it too bad. We don't care if we are the only ones in a room. I don't care. I prefer we live than care about what others think of us, As my doctor at Duke said, this is not over and taking off the masks you will see an uptick. He told me to keep mine on.

    1. Have some answers ready 'cause you're gonna have dipshits inform you loudly that you don't have to wear a mask anymore. I'm planning what I'd like to say now, actually.

You know, when the masks come off and there is a corresponding increase in cases, those same dumb fucks will refuse to see the facts.

One thing I've learned during all this? There are one hell of a lot of selfish assholes out there.

    2. Okay, so I too will be Mask wearing long after NOBODY else is, I've mused over Outrageous responses should someone say something. My Fav would be, "Oh, I am Positive, but I had nobody else to do this for me..." and get up on 'em, real close to see their unmasked reaction. Ah, if only... and of coarse that's a Fantasy response, even tho' some Idiots have gone out after Testing Positive and infected people purposefully, that's actually how I probably got COVID in January, infected Co-Worker that came in to Work AFTER she knew she was Testing Positive... who f*cking does that@!??!?

    3. Assholes. That's who does things like that. I am tired of keeping quiet and letting people shit on me, I am more vocal now than ever. Grr.

  4. Some areas are lifting mandates, but I think many of us will continue to live with caution. I still don't want to be indoors with crowds of people I don't know, who knows if they've been vaccinated . I've read a couple of articles that indicate many will continue to wear a mask, as they've enjoyed not catching flu or people's colds. I do hope this has taught people to not go out in public when sick. People used to say, just a cold...well who cares. I don't want your cold. Stay home so I don't get sick. That might be the one good thing to come out of this horrible long pandemic. It makes sense to me that kids can't do the program or be in school when sick, or not vaccinated. Sorry you had such a bad time of it on the roads. There have been some very bad storms around causing lots of accidents and issues for people. Spotted you on a mutual friends blog, so thought I'd pop in to say hi; it's always fun to meet new bloggers.

    1. It *is* fun to meet new bloggers. I visited yours. Knitting and crochet are beyond my patience level. My mom tried to teach me to crochet, but I got frustrated and gave up. Now she's 81 and her hands are arthritic and she doesn't make stuff anymore. I am glad to have the afghans she made.

I'd like to *think* people have learned some kind of lesson from this, such as not going out when you're sick, but in light of the incredible selfishness displayed by so many, I have to say I don't think many will have changed.

I'm pretty sure they're going to have me continue masking at school, which is okay with me. Working in a germ factory may be what I've chosen to do, but I like the idea of people keeping at least some of their germs to themselves.

  5. Sounds like you have the same kind of drivers when the snow hits. The dusting of snow here is always a traffic nightmare. People forget that you can't drive normally because of the snow and ice. Ugh. So frustrating. They are letting our kiddos go to school without masks at the end of the month.

    1. It's going to happen here, too.
We're in an odd situation, day care rules are different from school rules. So it's possible that the kids could go unmasked all day long then come to me after school and be asked to wear a mask. I hope that won't happen. But it could.

There were a lot of people in big trucks with 4WD who decided that 4WD means SPEEEEEEEDDDDDDDDDDDD.
