No, I did not get mad and quit last week.
Even though the idea of coming home, making dinner for my husband and doing a load of laundry sounded pretty appealing most days. It sounded better than continuing to try to organize stuff without shelves to put it on.
But Friday morning, the cabinets were delivered. They're not the best looking cabinets in the universe. A couple doors don't stay on. I put some duct tape on them to hold for now, then I'll get some hinges.
All the things I had labeled for my site were brought to me in only one load, which was a surprise. I had expected it to be at least two loads. Louise and Axel and Morgan all brought stuff in their vehicles.
Now I get to try to figure out how to get it all put away. I have made some progress, though.
Friday was a lonnnnggg day for me. My usual method of survival is to show up at 6:15, stay until 8:30 or so (kids go to class at 8) and be home by 9. And then a nap. Two hours. Or even three. Exhaustion is a great sleeping pill.
Friday I got there at my usual time but I needed to stay for the delivery of the shelves etc. I spent the time between taking kids to their class and the delivery tossing more garbage out and considering where things should go. I had time to make (decorate) some tri-fold boards. I'll try to get a photo of at least one of them this week, but one of them has the name of my employer on it, so I won't be posting that one.
I cut down cardboard boxes, tossed things into the recycling, moved tables. Looked through the games. We had several that the kids haven't played yet, not since I got there at the beginning of September. There were several games that are too grown up for them. They're not interested in them.
They also haven't played with the metric ton of blocks that were at site. So I got rid of them. Sent the extra blocks away with Louise when she left. Licensing requires us to have some blocks, but we had a huge amount. Four great big bins of them.
I spent a little more time cleaning and sorting, then Eric came to get me and we went out for lunch.
I had a little over an hour for lunch and then I was back... more sorting of course.
By the time I left on Friday evening, I was starting to get a glimpse of what things are going to look like.
When I checked my email here at home I learned that I had *not* been taken off the schedule for the week, even though I wasn't the person who uploaded my vaccine certificate.
Apparently we're having to temporarily close down some of our sites due to staffing issues. We just aren't getting the applicants right now.
I know that people are being a little more choosy about employment, but my employer pays pretty well. The issue is getting qualified people. In the state of Oregon, one must have a certain amount of supervised contact hours with children before they're allowed to be alone with them. Obviously this is for the safety of kids, although my personal opinion is that if someone has a nefarious purpose in mind and wants to use a job like this to gain access to kids, he or she would be patient enough for those contact hours to pass and then take action.
At any rate, we're not getting qualified applicants. So the idea of taking people off the schedule due to their own computer issues didn't happen.
Guess I'll be going back to work this week after all.
I'm hoping that I get everything in place by Friday. I admit I'm a little excited about it, tired of the chaotic mess and looking forward to making something I can be proud of.
And that's it, kids. Off to bed, it's a after 8 and 5 AM is TOO DAMN EARLY.

Wouldn't it be easier if you didn't care? Not that you are that kind of person.
ReplyDeleteIt would be easier if I didn't care about everything so much... but you're right, that's who I am.
DeleteDuct tape hinges. You're on the road to your "Guy Badge".
ReplyDeleteI also own a Leatherman tool, can drive a stick AND a forklift and cuss like a sailor.
Deletei'm not enjoying retirement but you are making it look better each day.
ReplyDeleteThat's me. A ray of sunshine.
DeleteProgress does help us feel better. And since when do you think that working for these companies (truthfully they all seem the same) is not going frustrate you?
ReplyDeleteI was lamenting the other day that I would just like to be left alone to do my job. Is that so much to ask? But noooooo.
DeleteYou will get it all where you want it, definitely not as soon as you want it, but you will. And then you will be back to posting funny things kids say, and all will be well in the world.
ReplyDeleteYes? tell me I'm right. Please?
Will it make you feel better if I just say you're right?
DeleteWell at least the delivered the cabinets and other things.
ReplyDeleteI am still a little surprised.
DeleteGetting and then KEEPING Qualified people seems to be the bane of the existence of many Employers these days.
ReplyDeleteIf I had another job lined up right now, I would consider quitting still. Just sick to death of the lack of support. It's driving me nuts.
