I
cannot go back to work at the job I love until I have been vaccinated
against the plague because the schools aren't allowing our staff or any
other childcare staff back in until they've received the vaccine.
So
on the 23rd of January vaccine availability opened up for
teachers/childcare workers, but it's been impossible to schedule an
appointment. One goes to the website and clicks through all the steps,
only to get either an error message or an endless little spinny circle
thing that just goes round and round and never finishes loading.
Until tonight.
Time for a shot.
Which I typoed as shit, but fixed before publication.
Just shoot me.
I
have a morning appointment on February 9th at the Oregon Convention
Center for the first dose. Apparently they schedule the second dose when
you're there for the first one.
I'm not full of enthusiasm because it's an unknown.
I
know that many of the usual steps for vaccine release were not followed
because of the urgency of this, so I'm a little nervous about long-term
effects. I've read as much as I can about it and I'm not scared away,
but still.
Also not a fan of driving down there and messing with
parking, but I won't take public transportation right now, so I'll be
heading down there in my car.
On the good side, karaoke!
I put a karaoke CD in and sing until I arrive at my destination.
In other news I'm still painting little pictures.
Last
weekend I took a buttload of stuff back to Kohl's/UPS store to return
to Amazon. It ended up being a little over a hundred and fifty bucks,
which I don't get back, it just goes on an Amazon gift card.
On the good side of that?
It's like free money!
So I ordered another stack of canvas panels (I used to hate canvas, now it's sort of fun to use) and a tabletop easel.
I
have watched a bunch of tutorials on YouTube as well as the book o'
Face and haven't decided what to paint next. So many possibilities.
I have painted some of the ones I've already done in a smaller version on cardstock and sent out a few cards to friends.
I still owe a few because people sent me cards over the holidaze.
But
I have to admit it's sort of fun to paint the stuff on cardstock, by
necessity it's a little smaller than the standard canvas. So far the
people who have received one seem appreciative, but you know, I do that
when kids bring me art they have made for me.
Huh.
So if you haven't been vaccinated yet, are you planning to get it when it becomes available? And if yes, would you be singing karaoke on the way there?

Probably wise of the school. With an infectious disease with deadly or crippling effects, every child who catches it will be a near-certain lawsuit. They need to be able to demonstrate that they took every possible precaution.
ReplyDeleteIt will be a while before I qualify for the vaccine, but I'll certainly get it. The vaccines currently in use have been approved in many advanced countries, including some that generally have stricter standards than the US. Risk is never absolutely zero with anything, but it seems pretty low in this case, and we know how dangerous the disease is.
Most of the people in my house are afraid of the vaccine. I understand their hesitance, but I don't agree with it. I do have some apprehension because of the whole unknown factor, but I want to go back to work someday, I don't want to get the virus. So I'm glad I was able to schedule an appointment. Out of curiosity I went back about a half hour later and tried to get an appointment scheduled, there were no openings. I must have hit it just right.

ReplyDeleteIt counts. But I have real karaoke songs that I've downloaded and put on a CD. Everything from the Eagles to Kansas to the really old BeeGees. Come visit, we'll drive around and sing.
DeleteI haven't been vaccinated against "regular" flu for years and haven't had the flu for years. I won't be vaccinated until forced. I do need a medical procedure that has been postponed several times because of this COVID nonsense (IMO) but may be forced if I want the procedure.

I don't get a flu vaccine. I was fortunate enough to have a no bullshit doctor who told me several interesting facts about the flu vaccine, mostly that it's a huge moneymaker for the manufacturers and is not very effective.

So glad you have your appointment for the vaccine. I'm a little nervous about it but I'll be taking it as soon as I can too. I'm not 65 yet, and not working in a position to get in sooner, so not sure how long I'll have to wait. Have fun painting!

I don't have a car right now but I used to sing in the car all the time. My doctor doesn't have the vaccine yet but when she does she said she'll come here and give it to me. That way I don't have to go anywhere. I have a doctor through the Visiting Medical Clinic so I don't have to go to their office. I don't think I would be seeing any doctor if I had to go to office.

At this point all the doctors and nurses have had it, and they will get any and all reactions nearly first. Why is that so uplifting? I don't know, but it is. Maybe because they'll do anything to save themselves, so, that will extrapolate to us? I do know that we have toed every line, done everything right and it will be nice to be able to do SOMETHING. Because this isn't living, either.
ReplyDeleteI have read about a couple reactions, but all the people I know who have had the vaccine are fine. I have a few friends who are medical professionals and have had no adverse reaction, either.

Postal people are in phase 1B. Massachusetts went from Phase 1 to Phase 2 already... maybe we will be able to get into the next wave once they go through Phase Z? Whatever...
ReplyDeleteOldest will likely have to get it because he's in college. Youngest has said it's a HARD PASS from him, he'll take his chances with the actual virus than the vaccine. The Hubs will likely get it, and I don't know. They are saying people with food allergies should NOT get it, so I would fall into that category. Course, by the time it gets to me we should know more details on the side effects and effectiveness.
But I'll be singing no matter what I decide. Lately, singing loudly and off key is the only thing getting me through.
Music has gotten me through a LOT of things in my life.
DeleteI have mixed feelings about jumping the line ahead of the elderly in Oregon. But if I were to step aside it would just go to someone else on the current list.
You need it to go back to work. Those that are compromised will get it because they are on the existing lists. I can be done with the gen pop if necessary, I'm fine with that. You should feel absolutely NO GUILT in getting back to doing what you love. You're family matters too!

DeleteWe are not in the part of phase 2 yet which is when teachers can get it. What's really sad? Someone I love teaches. Their firs station has a list of every over 70 in the town. On occasion they have an extra dose or two that they WANT to offer to the teachers when they can't administer it to an over 70 for whatever reason. The PRINCIPAL of the school sent an email out stating that any teacher that got one of the "extras" (that would otherwise be thrown out that day) before the state roll out of the part of phase 2 that includes teachers, would be fired. It would never stick of course, but sadly... this level of ridiculous is where we are at in this.

DeleteOn the bright side, MA now has waiting lists along with the appointment sites that anyone can sign on to regardless of age, etc. Basically you go on the list for the center in your area, and if they have extras that day that may go to waste, they call you.

DeleteI am so pro vaccine I entered the J&J Phase 3 trial for their vaccine. It was only 50/50 shot at getting the real juice vs a placebo, but that chance was worth it for a guy like me with a couple or four co-morbidities.
ReplyDeleteI did NOT sing on the way to the appointment (back in December) cuz I was listening to a talk radio show but! When the wife and I are in the truck with the radio going, I tend to hum along to the more interesting bass lines. Drives the wife batty - I kinda like it!

Got a text to book my appointment, but I'm holding off on it for now. Have now pre existing conditions. While I do know the virus is real, I don't think we have been told everything. Some things just don't add up. In 1918 my mother was born & my dad was three. The economy didn't shut down because of a Pandemic back then. Nice chatting with you. (((hugs)))

When you said you typed shit instead of shot and caught it just in time, I think it would have read funnier if you had missed the typo? *LOL* I don't know when they'll ever get to my Tier or my Grandchild's Tier, but The Man is scheduled for his 2nd Dose in about a Week and his first Dose at the VA went well, but we had to fight for him to Qualify to get it... they wanted him to be 75 or better, WTF?! I don't wanna be mean spirited, but by the time you're in your late 70's and beyond, you already had your Good Run, and Younger people are dropping Dead from this right, left and center too who haven't had nearly a good shot at Life! Many have people dependent upon them, are still raising Families and are the primary wage earners, so I don't like this Flavor Of The Month Club on who Qualifies to get it and whose excluded right now... not one bit, it's not equitable. It's not even really helping mitigate spread since I doubt the very elderly have ever been the Super Spreaders... just sayin'!

DeleteBut I *can* sing and it brings me happiness. The fact that I love music from the 1400s to today gives me a large repertoire, but many things I'd enjoy belting out aren't available on karaoke.
Do you plan to get the vaccine when it's available? I am surprised at the number of people who have decided against it. I do understand the hesitancy, I just hope that people will not be harmed by it and eventually everyone will be safe from the virus.
