One
of the reasons I try not to discuss political stuff unless I know
someone pretty well is that so many people have a picture in their heads
of what's real and right and are rabid when someone suggests a
different viewpoint.
::sigh::
I've been chatting online with a group of women since 1998.
No, not a typo.
Way back in the days of AOL chat rooms and actual hosts, I hosted twice weekly chats in AOL's Homefront Hall, part of a forum dedicated to homeschooling.
We formed friendships based on common ground and 'watched' each other's children grow up and go on to their own lives. With the exception of two of us, everyone else is a grandma now, some of them have grandchildren who are 12 years old already. (insert obligatory 'wow, time flies' comment here)

And
since my life is a series of digressions (gotta be the ADD way I do
everything)...
My own children have decided they don't want to have babies. I'm
disappointed because I'd love to have grandchildren, but I've told my
kids *multiple* times that having a baby 'cause your mom wants to be a
grandma is NOT a good reason to reproduce. Ha. I can't imagine smacking
them over the head with it or showing any kind of disappointment.
I got to make my choices, I respect theirs.
Neither one arrived at the decision without a great deal of thought and discussion.
My kids are smart and capable.

I'd be a good grandma, though. Craft projects and cookie baking and really bad jokes. What's not to like?
So about those chat friends.
We had a great deal in common, but there were things we didn't agree on, too.
Politics and religion, the perennial favorites. Things like nutrition and being strict Vegan or eating whatever you want or (my personal philosophy pass the damn sugar) and curriculum (or no curriculum) etc. But there were so many things we liked about one another that long after AOL dumped their forums and chats we continued to catch up with each other once a week.

We've continued to do so. 22 years now that the four of us have stayed in touch. (Actually 5 of us, but one doesn't always manage to get to the chats, we all have lives and some are busier than others)
There have been marriages, divorces and grandchildren and cross-country moves. Job losses, loss of family members, financial difficulties, mental illness. We've supported each other through all of it, and some of us have even met each other in person.
Those 'imaginary friends' as my family has called them more than once, are as important to me as some of my friends who live nearby.
I am happy when something good happens for one of them, sad for them when things aren't going well. We text each other. Occasionally chat on the phone. I care deeply about each one of them.

Until recently, we've all managed to make it to our chats on Friday nights.
But one of my friends doesn't want to be there for awhile. She's not able to do political discussion without anger over the disagreements. I'm not actually certain about who she voted for, but she has so much going on in her personal life right now that any conflict is too much.
And it makes me sad.
I wish everyone could discuss issues instead of people.
I don't believe about half of the crap I hear from both sides. I know I'm not alone.
:::sigh:::
WHEN will this be over?
If you read my blog, you know where I am coming from. My immediate neighbor across the hall I enjoy as I do her next door neighbor. We simply don't discuss politics as we are polar opposites. Politeness goes a long way. Disagree without being disagreeable.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many things people can agree on.
DeleteAnd no one gives a shit what any of us think until the next go-round.
During this what I call the WhatTheFuck'ery Pandemic, I have two neighbors who I do enjoy and think about doing as well! Politics in this changing world? What about the BUCKET list of things I have to do before some stupid ass bug glooming around fucks my plans up. Let them blow each other up or get blown under the podium..these politicians are cockblocking us! The sun rises and sets and we can enjoy the colors in real not the colors on the TVSET! Breath deep... get some and get some good and then smoke a what ever or sing a song as you lay naked feeling alive!
DeleteI keep running into crazy people when we're doing our weekly store run. Yesterday was no exception. I'll be trying to write it up this weekend. At least I hope to. We're not feeling terribly great around our house today.
DeleteRemember back when you got a little ill and didn't automatically think you were going to die?
Ami, i like the way the title of this post is a sort of unofficial tribute to Katherine Hepburn, very witty.
DeleteI have several friends from 'the other side'. We just don't talk politics. And because of COVID I haven't seen them since the election. It will be an interesting get together when COVID is under control. If I'm still alive in whatever year that will be.
ReplyDeleteI wish, when presented with all the same information, that we could agree on things. I know, try wishing in one hand and crapping in the other and see which one fills up first.
Delete::sigh::
I loved AOL chat rooms! I kept in touch with friends from there for years but they eventually faded away unfortunately. My first blog was on AOL Journals. Some of those friends I am still in touch with. Those were the good old days.
ReplyDeleteI hate that our country is so divided, it's so sad. Some people have dropped friends they've had for many years, and some I've heard even disowning family members. I want it to be over too!
I enjoyed hosting. Loved the Friday night time slot, we'd have 20 to 35 people chatting at once. It was a lot of fun.
DeleteThis *is* my first blog, lol.
I have heard of families breaking up over politics, too. It all just makes me sad.
I forgot to mention I go back to the BBS days. (Bulletin board systems) When you had to dial into another person's computer. My daughter, then about 10-12 got into BBSing and made friends that she still has today. Sometimes she mention someone and I'll ask her where she knows them from. "Oh, they're an old BBSer."
ReplyDeleteI am sorry, Ami. Hopefully it will be over soon especially as a lot of Trump's cult are seeing what kind of a person he really is after losing the election. Take care.
ReplyDeleteOMG yes, what a sore loser.
DeleteBut I'm afraid that people who are in the cult aren't seeing at ALL what kind of person he is.
You are probably right but I am working on my list for Santa so I might give it a shot.
DeleteBBS isn't something I was familiar with until just now.
ReplyDeleteHuh.
I am happy I made friends, one of the things I love about the internet is the way people can meet and communicate ideas without judging others by their appearances.
Many of our Online Friendships can be as close, or closer, than the in person ones. I've made some close Friends online and then some I've had the privilege of then meeting in person and having the In The Flesh relationships with too. I can see why the one Friend might bow out during particularly controversial topics, Life can be a bit much even without that... I have Friends and Family that bowed out of their Social Media for similar reasons when it got to be Too Much for them. Mostly we now Private Message one another and they've expanded on why they just had to take a break from the Online stuff mostly, I understand completely. I have a closed Page on FB so that anyone who becomes Too Much can be disengaged and its discreet enough most don't even notice and then can't really cause trouble even if they did notice and took issue, since they're now Blocked. It's easier that way than having the crazy interactions some people seem compelled to do Online and might even thrive off of the Drama of? I like The Land Of Blog because only rarely does someone connect that is going to be problematic or decide they connected and now just don't want to if they find the Blog or Blogger just doesn't suit them or gel with their way of Being. And its okay with me if some bow out, whether they feel they need to explain why or not... it's Fine, Be Well and move on is the way I send a departure note if they've taken the time to tell me they don't want to 'Follow' the Ole' Blog anymore. I do think this Political Climate got very Ugly, Uglier than most Politics and even most Religious discussions... it got too Cult-like and you can never reason with Cults and that Mentality they become indoctrinated into, so it's best to just know who they are and make sure they don't cause strife in the lives of Non-Cult Members. A lot of Cults become very Dangerous and Threatening, since most tend to have this built-in Paranoia and Cult Leaders who convince them the World is against them.
ReplyDeleteIt's one of the most astounding things I've ever seen, the way the cult has grown. I would hope people are too smart to fall for it... but I'd be wrong.
DeleteI've noticed that FB has been VERY quiet. A lot of people have just stopped checking in, I think. I know that I'm avoiding it, my mom is driving me insane with her cult of trump obsession.
4 years ago, after THAT election, I had a friend who posted that if you voted for Trump, to please unfriend him. I asked if it was really worth it to dump a friend over politics, but he never responded. I suppose that if the politics of our country are that important to someone, then there is not much in common enough to maintain a friendship. For me, I vote, I don't discuss ~ and once it's over, I just sit back and see. Other than the obligatory letters, petitions, etc. there isn't much I can do. But a good friend is a treasure.
ReplyDeleteWell you can definitely say the guy polarizes people. I can't understand what he has on so many of 'em, though. They're AFRAID of him and do whatever he tells them to. I am shocked at some of the craziness, and I thought he couldn't go any lower. I was wrong.
DeleteI'm sorry. I can talk politics with you, but I'd rather talk kids. Or crafts. Or anything else, honestly.
ReplyDeleteYoungest doesn't want kids, ever. He actually wants a vasectomy, though I'm not sure where he'd find a doctor to do it at only 18, he's dead set on it. While I think it's premature, its' his choice. He does REALLY want to be an uncle though, and the world need lots of fun uncles.
To be truthful, I'm not dead set on grandkids. If they happen, awesome. If not that's okay too. Life is hard, the world is scary. And I'm not so sure bringing another generation into it is a stellar idea.
I'd love to be a grandma, something I never expected to say. :) But I'm sincere about respecting my children and their wish to remain child free. If we are ever allowed to live again, perhaps I can continue enjoying the young people I hang with after school. I really miss my job.
DeleteI doubt he can find a doctor who will do that at his age, but you know, a vasectomy *is* reversible. Sometimes spontaneously. I have two friends who've had vasectomy babies. Oops.
I do know that. My friend's husband actually did have his reversed on purpose and they have a beautiful 1 year old now. Thing is I think deep down he is afraid of passing on his genetics. He struggles. Much of which is genetical. I think he's afraid of having a child who will struggle like he does, and that's a very valid reason to not want kids. And when he's asked "what if you change your mind" his answer is always, "then I'll adopt."
