When he's not teaching the other kids swear words, running in the cafeteria, getting screamingly angry over a piece of Bionicle or belching at the snack table, anyway.
In my job, I can't talk with school personnel about a child unless the parent(s) of the child has checked the little box on our information/enrollment forms that allows us to discuss. All my parents have done so, however, so I am able to share observations/concerns about kids.
I sent an email to the counselor this week. This is a short excerpt, names changed as usual.
Today,
Juan was teaching the rest of the group how to play a game.
I was across the room with Amelia, helping her with a little project.

I heard raised voices, looked up to see everyone yelling at Will. There were cries of, "You're cheating!"
He jumped up from the game table, screaming. Ran toward the end of the room with the doors to the outside. Stopped just before the doors, placed his hands on the wall and bashed his head into the wall HARD about six times.
He jumped up from the game table, screaming. Ran toward the end of the room with the doors to the outside. Stopped just before the doors, placed his hands on the wall and bashed his head into the wall HARD about six times.
I
caught up with him as he sat down at one of the tables, said quietly,
"Will," and he smacked his head on the table another four times, also
hard.
I'm
talking *hard* impact. Hard enough that if he does this often enough,
he's going to give himself a concussion. This isn't a small little
headsmack to draw attention, this is serious self-harm.
I sat with him while he calmed down, and we discussed whether the head banging had made things better.
He agreed that he still felt bad and that on top of that, his head hurt, now.
"But I wasn't cheating!!" he said. "They just didn't want me to play!!"
I talked with his dad, and he's doing all the right things, or at least the things I'd be doing if it were my child. There are many factors that cause children to be angry. But being angry enough to hurt himself rings all kinds of alarm bells for me. So I'm keeping an eye on him in case I have an opportunity to help.
Because of privacy concerns, I don't want to say a lot more about it, but I can tell you I've lost a little sleep over this one.
He's changed a great deal in just the last couple months. He has a different look to him, whatever's going on in his life shows on his face.
There have been a couple more incidents of head banging since this one, he just gets angry so fast.
::sigh::
Poor guy, sounds like massive amounts of frustration. I hope things improve and he quits banging his head ~ that would really freak me out.
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely not my favorite thing to watch. I am worried about him.
DeleteDo you never get a break then??? Poor Will, poor Susan, and poor all the other kids. Must be hard for them too.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice and calm week, if possible that is!
Also: how is the packing up going? Only two more weeks to the end of the school as you knew it (but you did know that)!
Ah, there's always something going on with the kids, most of the time it's just kid stuff, but this has me worrying.
DeletePacking isn't going too badly, they got me the boxes I asked for and sent me someone to help one afternoon last week, she hung out with the kids while I did some sorting and tossing and packing.
Two weeks from yesterday, the school will be torn down.
First guess? Someone is molesting him.
ReplyDeleteHe lives in more than one household. And when he comes back from staying with Mom, he's not in a good place mentally.
DeleteI can't say for sure what's going on, because I do not know. But I had that thought, too. I don't want it to be true. Or even a possibility.
Well dang, poor kid. Hopefully whatever is happening in his family life will straighten itself out. My younger brother acted like that when he was younger after our parents divorced and both parents started dating other people.
ReplyDeleteI hope things straighten out for him, too.
DeleteIf you know me, you know I'm not a public school fan. My dislike does not extend to the people who work with the kids, though. I have found the vast majority of them to be engaged, empathetic, kind and caring. They really do try to do what's best for the children in their care. When I have a child who has issues like Will does, they're usually already on it and my observations just get added to theirs. Will's teacher, the school counselor and his dad are all on his team, as am I. If just wanting things to be okay would work, he'd be fine for sure. Keeping fingers crossed.
Big Sigh! I wish we could see behind the lines. He is worse when he comes back from his mom's. Does his mom ever bring him in or take him home? Sounds like Will needs a safe person to confide in, why does he hurt himself when he messes up? Like someone said, molestation?
ReplyDeleteJust so sad! I hope you will one day hear a success story about Will down the line!
I hope so, too. Today was the last day of school (12th of June) and he was just completely out of control. He seems to be unable to listen to me at all. Having Caden doesn't help, as he loves inappropriate behavior and commentary. They feed off of each other. Argh.
