Here's how you do it...

This morning I had only Colin and Alex. They're 9 and 6, respectively.

It's normal to have only two kids, mornings are fun and laid back. I deserve that, really, considering what my afternoons have been like lately.

::sigh::

They were playing with the Bionicles after they'd both eaten a bowl of cereal. Both were absorbed in building, Colin silently focused and Alex whistling quietly. It went on a few minutes. Colin suddenly noticed that Alex was whistling.

"Hey, how do you do that?" he asked.
"Do what?"
"Whistle. I want to whistle."

Alex considered for a moment. Then he said, "Well, basically you put your lips in a kissing position," and he demonstrated. "Then, you just... blow!"

He whistled sharply.

Cracked me up.

Colin tried and tried, pursing his lips and looking down his nose at them and occasionally getting a noise but mostly just air. It really was funny.

He saw me smiling and said, "Do you know how to whistle?"

I told him that I'm not very good at it. That I can sing and carry a tune but whistling seems to be beyond me.

He wanted me to show him. "Let me see you try," he said.

I laughed.

Instead I looked up Roger Whittaker's Mexican Whistler on YouTube.
Even Alex was impressed. :-D

    1. I love Roger. Have listened to him since he hit the music scene back in the 60's with New World In The Morning.

  2. I can't carry a tun, sing or whistle. I am a loser.

    2. But Margaret, so many people can carry a tune and/or whistle and are losers... so I can't agree with you here. Sorry. :)

    3. 4th grade is too early for most kids to understand what's going on with music. I didn't understand any of it until 6th, and then didn't understand quite a lot.

  3. Holy moley, that is some whistler! My Aunt Ethel used to whistle pretty well, but nothing like Roger! I'm lucky if my whistle attracts the attention of the dog, haha.

    1. I never whistled for my dog, although Eric did. I love Roger Whittaker. He's amazing. Look up some more of his stuff on YouTube, the guy can really sing.
