We're all nuts.

Lots of stairs at my school.
The new one will be 100% accessible, which I am looking forward to.

But of course right now we're still in the (91 year) old building.

I have to go in the front door even though there's a lower door with fewer stairs directly into the cafeteria. Can't use my card key down there.

So I go up ten steps. Wave my badge in front of the electric window and through what they want us to believe is the miracle of modern technology (it's magic*, I know it is) the door clicks, the light turns green and I step in and drag my feet across the long rug runner to wipe off the stray leaves and assorted slugs/mud/glop I've picked up on the way in.

*You do believe in magic, right?

I visualize a wizened little gnome sitting in there pushing buttons. I see him as the school tech version of the Walmart greeter... too old to be running around arranging merchandise but not too old to smile, be cheerful and judge check you at the door.

Like many Walmart greeters, he has leathery brown skin, white ear hairs, scraggly eyebrows and a long, beaky nose. He's not constrained by the dress code, though.
Happily wearing loose gray gnome-sized sweatpants, green crocs and a blue and white striped tank top, he sits in his own little swivel chair, spinning around giddily when there's no one at the door.

He has a lot of wrinkles and can't skip around the way he used to, but has definitely not outlived his usefulness.
He smells like cinnamon sugar.
Apparently I've given this an inordinate amount of thought.
Aren't you glad you stopped by?

So I got through the front hall, then down two flights of stairs to the cafeteria where the first damn thing I noticed was that one of the doors to the outside were open and goddammit, I could have skipped the front stairs and the judgy gnome.

The doors were open because our substitute custodian, wearing all black (no whimsy there!!) and carrying a big-assed broom was trying to drive a 300 lb squirrel out of the building. I stopped at the bottom of the stairs, my sleepy brain trying to make sense of what was going on. The custodian, waving the broom, was chasing this scampering creature. Said creature didn't want anything to do with the open door, so he headed right toward me. I waved my arms at him, but he dodged around me and went upstairs.

The custodian flung up his hands, dropping his broom in the process, and with a heavy sigh, went to the doors and opened the other one. As it slammed open, the lighted exit sign fell off the wall in a shower of sparks and a puff of ozone. He was damned lucky it didn't fall on him and electrocute him.
Our school is seriously falling apart.

So I moved a couple tables to block the area where the sign had fallen so that no kids would walk near it as they came in. The hapless custodian was still chasing the squirrel, but finally cornered it in the restroom at the top of the stairs.

He stopped by my program to let me know that the, "Pest guys and electric guys are on their way, the squirrel is up there in the urinal." And he gestured with his head. Rolled his eyes. It really was sort of funny.

I spent my short morning program listening to various adults jumping and screaming in the upper hallway because the squirrel hadn't stayed in the urinal (would you??) and was roaming around.

I'm sure the squirrel was having the time of his life.
Thinking the world is full of nuts.
What the hell is wrong with all the humans? Haven't they ever seen a squirrel before? Why don't they just let me out instead of chasing me with a stick?
Haha.

How are things in your world?

Walking so long and climbing too many staircase will make us feel tired. You have nicely viewed the punching machine. Now this has become mandatory every where we go...

    1. I admit that I actually sat here and 'saw' all of it. Visualized the entire thing, even heard the sound of the squeaky chair as he spun in a circle.

I probably need my head examined.

  3. Thank you, I really needed the gnome and squirrel stories today, but why all those stairs? Doesn't anyone know about your feet/knee issues? How well you must hide it from them! And dragging all the furniture and other stuff around too... Oh, before I forget: I'm sure Matt could draw us a gnome and a 300lbs squirrel playing a nutty game no?

    1. Oh they know. There just isn't anything they can do about it. They could move me to a more accessible school, but that wouldn't be what I want. It's a little difficult dragging the ancient and heavy tables around, but it's not that much of an issue. The biggest problem is the stairs, and I'll be done with those at the end of the school year.

Matt doesn't have an awful lot of spare time right now, but it would be fun to see what he'd come up with. Lyssa, too. Both of them are so talented with their art.

    1. You can't swing a broom at a poltergeist.
Well, you *can* but it's sort of pointless, don't you think?
