Definitely feeling better. Haven't had a fever since yesterday afternoon. Go, me.
I've been teaching the kids how to weave using soda straws to hold the warp threads. So it's time to bring in the big tabletop loom for them. I have bins of yarn in the momcave just waiting to be used.
One of my boys told me today that their previous site director person was, "nice, she never made us feel bad, you know how sometimes teachers do?"
When I nodded agreement, he gestured at the weaving he was doing and said, "But she never taught us stuff like this."
It's not a super easy project, most of the time I've noticed that a kid needs to be about 8 before he or she has the manual dexterity to keep track of the over/under thing, but it's not difficult for most of the kids who've shown an interest. It's funny, they seem to not be interested in doing it unless it's something that's really possible for them.
Anyway, I am feeling a lot better, although still a little overwhelmed. Things are taking shape and I'm (mostly ) running the job instead of it running me.
I feel better. I'm teaching the kids to weave. We're creating stuff.

I crack me up.
The kids are loving all the creative projects. And so am I.
It's too bad you can't teach them how to make those potholders that we all made as kids. I shall keep my eyes peeled... maybe I'll stumble across the terry loops cheap. :)

It's actually a fun project but the way they make the looms now, the loops pop off. It's the most frustrating thing I can imagine. And multiply it by 8 kids or so, all needing help, all complaining, at least two of them crying.
I think the kids will have great memories of weaving!
ReplyDeleteSomething so nice about the texture and color of various yarns. I don't knit or crochet, but I can't resist touching the yarn when I see it at the store. The kids are the same, they love it.

ReplyDeleteI will do it. I am so happy with the way the room looks now, especially compared to what it looked like the day I walked in. It was so disheartening to see it... I was already having a hard time leaving my second home, and to see the dusty, forgotten room, crowded with tables and the bulletin board covered with faded construction paper... so I will be posting photos as much as possible. :)
