I read and ramble...

I used to read all the time.
Books.

I still read constantly, but a great deal of my reading is done online. I read a lot of politics lately, but it's the season, not that I really give a shit about the candidates. If I waste any emotional energy on them at all, it's just hate. I hate them with a strong passion almost approaching my dislike for Fluffy.

I read a study that was done many years ago about how people just didn't read anymore after they'd been forced to read and read and read in school/college. Several of the respondents admitted to hating reading. HATING it. How does that happen? I remember falling in love with books as a small child and being so excited about learning to read. I couldn't wait. I got in trouble in school because I could already read when I got there. And they didn't like that. My second grade teacher told my parents that "She's not really reading, she has memorized stuff."
I still don't know how I could memorize books I'd never seen before, but that old bag was certain I couldn't actually read. I clearly recall the other kids in the class barking out sounds while 'learning' to read.

Once again, I ask... is there a more clueless demographic than the educrats?

I remember wondering how it was possible that people didn't love to read. So many stories out there. So many books. So many wonderful writers.

This summer, I've had a bit of time to do real reading. Paper. Books. A lot of books. I am grateful for the time I've had off work. Particularly glad I wasn't stuck with the cavalcade.

But I've reacquainted myself with real books over summer.

I've read so many stories. The good ones stick with me.
Favorite books come out on occasion. I read through a whole series.
It's not like the endings are a surprise, but the characters are old friends. Predictable friends... but friends.

My husband teases me about it sometimes, but he likes me. I know it amuses him.

I do the same thing with some movies, too. I have some old favorites there, too.
Like right now, while I am writing this, I'm watching The Birdcage.

Makes me laugh every time I watch it, too.

So I don't have a smart phone. I know just about everyone in the universe does, though. When I have to wait somewhere, I pull out the tangle stuff and draw or I :::gasp::: pull an actual book out of my purse and read.

I've actually caught people staring at me when they look away from their phones long enough to notice I'm not playing with my phone.

I was waiting for a job interview earlier this month and the receptionist forgot I was sitting there. She suddenly said, "OH!! I am SO SORRY! I totally forgot you were sitting there! You're so quiet!"

I looked at her, not sure what to say.
"Would you like me to be louder?"

She laughed.

"No, that's not what I mean. But everyone who comes in either plays with their phone or talks on it."

I didn't mention that I thought it was rude to do that, but that's what I think.

And have you ever been in line at the grocery store or Target or wherever and the person who's checking out in front of you doesn't even talk to the clerk? Not a hello or a thank you or anything... 'cause they're too busy talking on the phone.

Hate that.

So today was more sorting of crap. I'm trying to finish getting rid of stuff I don't need in time for school to start. I won't feel like farting around with it. I'll be too tired. Because I'll be getting up at 5 again.

Ah well.

So what are you up to?
And do you read?

  1. I do read....A LOT! I can't remember a time when I couldn't read! I always have a book, or two, going. The problem I have, is that, after I've read a book, and started another one, I almost completely have forgotten what the last book was about. Now, most of the time, I don't really care, but if I remember that I enjoyed it, I need to spend some time 'remembering'!

I, also, don't like all the phones. We have a flip one. We take it when we go for a 'grandma' fix.

I have started saying 'Good Morning' to all the people I see when we go to 'sprawlmart'! Most will respond with a 'Good Morning' back.

    1. I work really hard to be friendly to the clerks and the guy at the gas station and the lady behind the desk at the library.
I want to treat people with the respect I want to receive.

The reading makes me so happy. I have resolved to have at least one book going all the time this school year.

  2. I LOVE to read. Both on my kindle and real live books. Doesn't matter which. A good story is tops with me. Found a new favorite author recently. Blake Crouch. Don't know if he's something you'd like, but man o man he has some awesome stories. If you like Stephen King or Dean Koontz, you'd likely like him. I agree totally that people are so involved with their "boxes" that it makes me very aware of how much I am on mine. For example last Saturday at a baseball game a lot of parents around us weren't even watching the games, just focused on their "box" missing their kid make plays or good hits. Kinda pissed me off, truth be told. Why waste the time even going if you aren't even going to pay attention to what the fuck is going on?@!?@?@?@?!!

I make it a point to be polite to everyone in the service industry; whether they are a cashier or food server, whatever they deserve respect and kindness. My kids who have worked in customer service now say that they didn't understand why I went out of my way to be nice until they were in the position to either receive kindness/assholeness or whatever and that they sure appreciate that I do that.

    Anywho.. how's the foot?

    1. My ankle is doing great. Have two more sessions of PT with my favorite therapist, then I'm done with the rehab portion of it all.

Yeah, the telephone... I have seen whole families out together at a restaurant and they're all looking at their phones. Ignoring each other.

Parents at the playground, pushing the child with one hand while holding the phone with the other.

I try to remember that the old grandma in line ahead of me with all the coupons who is WRITING. A. CHECK. and holding up the line is someone's grandma.

And because I miss mine so much, I send love to that old lady in front of me instead of getting impatient.

Lots to be said for walking a mile in someone else's shoes.

  3. Ha! I wrote this about cell phones some time ago: http://texasgirlreplanted.blogspot.com/2014/03/the-art-of-conversation-is-dying.html I don't think the situation is getting any better, based on my observation of our waiting room at work.

But, I wanted to comment on reading, and how much I truly love to read. No amount of reading for college will ever kill the desire to lose myself in a book. And I've had to do a lot of reading for classes ~ I printed up 75 pages a few min. ago for the honors class. But, I am somewhat ashamed that I don't go to the library much anymore, I mostly read books on my Kindle. Which I can do at night without a book light, so Romeo can sleep while I read for about 1/2 an hour every single night.

Even as a young teenager, Mom used to yell "get your nose out of that book and go OUTSIDE!". Ha ha

    1. Oh my gosh, my mom too!! "Would you GO OUTSIDE???" So I did. Got my book and went out and climbed a tree and read my book outside. One thing my parents did that was really, really good was to let me read anything I was interested in reading.

I love to read, too. And always will.

I enjoy writing as well. I like the ability to express myself. And hey, it's a written record of some of the shit that's gone on... I may need it. The mood I'm in, I won't even stop to remove the profanities. Since Fluffy is a walking F word.

  4. Love reading. Everything: your blog for example, but too many other texts included! But have decided to no longer read books for some time. I can't stop until they're finished, so I don't sleep (because it does take me longer than a couple of hours in the evening to read a whole book). And I need my sleep. At least a couple of hours every night. So no more book reading for me (hurray for blogs - with or without profanities! I'd go nuts if I didn't have anything to read at all).
I prefer to read in English, which adds an extra difficulty when trying to find something suitable (no horror/thrillers either) and for books, I read paper only. But school is almost starting so really, only reading your blog (and some others, but not many).
As for stories from the past: I used to wait until my sister was asleep to be able to turn on the light in our room so I could continue to read. Didn't sleep a lot when I was young either...

    1. Funny that the light didn't wake your sister up. I was always sad in the evenings when it was time to turn out the light and go to sleep. I hated school, would much rather have been able to just read all the time. Considering what school *didn't* teach me, I would have learned much, much more.

I'm glad you're reading here. Looked at my stats this morning, which is something I almost never bother to do, and I'm approaching 200,000 page views. For a little blog that's not searchable and one I'm not actively trying to get new readers for, it's not bad. I'm sort of excited, really.
