So Joseph came home from rehab on Thursday.
It's not easy. And
Tami is still trying to write (as THE money earner for the family, she
sort of has to) and take care of him. Without giving personal details, I
will just say that she has to take care of ALL his needs, even the
private ones, and that he isn't the same person he was before the
stroke.
A large personality change has happened, and she's left caring
for someone who, while not a complete stranger, isn't the man she was
married to a month ago. She's doing what most people do when faced with this... coping as
best she can, going on with living and trying to adjust to this new person in her life.
She wrote on Facebook today that she had no idea it would be so hard.
One
of the responses she got made me want to reach through the screen and
slap the person who wrote it, although that's probably not the right way
to handle it. I actually don't care what the right way is... if I were able
to reach through and slap, I would be happy to do so anyway. This person wanted to
'stress the positive' and pointed out that money has been donated, that
people have done things to help and that he's on the road to recovery.
Well, sure. Those are all positive things.
She
went on to compare Joseph's stroke to her own back surgery and how hard
her husband had to work to take care of her and how she *thought* she
had friends but then she learned who her real friends were.
So because she's had a hard time with a surgery, that means that Tami's not allowed to vent? To say what she's feeling?
Like I said... urge to slap.
Tami needs to be able to talk about what's bothering her. She needs to be
able to do so without trying to carefully choose her words. She is
entitled to say whatever she wants to say. I would think that the person
who was so nasty would just click that little button and remove herself
from Tami's FB friends instead of commenting on how Tami is allowed to
feel.
Thankfully other people have said they think Tami should
feel free to vent. To talk about what has happened and what's happening
now, using whatever words she wants to describe her current situation.
Part of being someone's friend is listening to them. Being there when they need to talk.
And
not interrupting someone's narrative about what's bothering them to say
something like, "Oh you think that's a big deal? Well let me tell you
what happened to ME!"
I'm not going to put all this on Tami's facebook page. I did comment that she should feel free to say whatever she needs to say, but I'm not going to engage in an argument or disagreement with a stranger on the internet.
Especially when I know it would escalate quickly and I'd call her names.
Grr.
Ha, yeah, Tami was unsettled by the response, but incredibly gratified at how her many friends rallied around. This is a hell of a difficult journey, but these moments of friendship and kindness make a huge difference. Thanks for loving me, Miss Susan.
ReplyDeleteIf you ever get an urge to NOT say something/reach out during this difficult time, call me. I'll drag it outa you!!
DeleteLike I said to you earlier, I don't think she meant to treat your situation disrespectfully, but I still would like to slap her.
Oh. And remind me to tell you about Eric's response when I read that post to him. I use a lot of swear words...but it's NOTHING compared to what he said. :-D
DeleteConsider this a reminder. . . what did he have to say?
DeleteAnswered via email. :)
DeleteAaaaaahhh, Facebook. I love to hate it. So many self-centered, self-righteous people, that are only interested in their own thoughts and feelings about everything. "Unfollow" is a wonderful option and so is the ability to delete comments.
ReplyDeleteI mostly hate Facebook. I'm there for the same reason that millions of other people are, though. Keeping up with friends/family. Well, some family. Remember Dick and Snatchie? Snatchie apparently felt that my posts weren't religious enough. She was afraid I might lead her astray, I guess. Her sons, my nephews, followed suit and unfriended me. My brother hasn't because he's still trying to sell his cheesy book and needs all the Facebook friends he can get.
DeletePerhaps her visiting someone(counseling is usually available for caregivers) to vent that isn't family and has no preconceived opinions of her or him and she could just vent and get tools to perhaps help her cope. No one should not be able to vent for fear of judgement. This is difficult on the best of days. That is why there are so many books about stress for caregivers. I wish all involved the best of everything.
ReplyDeleteI am hoping she will find a counselor or support group that works for her. Obviously she can vent to me any time... we've known each other for a long time and we're at that place in our relationship where we can tell each other anything at all without fear of judgement. She's amazing.
DeleteI was just disgusted by the person who was such a jerk. Apparently it's not a real friend of hers, though. Just Facebook. So her opinion means nothing much.
Yeah ~ Facebook used to be fun, but now it's just a chore. I do post once in a while, but I'm sick of the political and religious rants, obvious self promotion and the like. I probably should just give up on the whole thing. Bah...humbug.
ReplyDeleteThe good side of FB for me is daily chats with my mom, catching up with friends who are scattered all over the place and seeing pictures of their grandchildren and their lives.
DeleteI am pretty sick of the politics, too. As if our vote means something. What a joke.
I will keep my FB but it's locked down. Someone looking me up on FB doesn't see much of anything. Don't want anything used against me. That's another reason I never mention people's real names or locations on my blog. Or the name of the company I work for. At least for now.
