Just doing stuff

Working on a care package for my friend in rehab.
Tied two shirts last night, and after grocery shopping and dye mixing, I'll be dyeing shirts. And socks. And other stuff. As long as I have all the stuff out, may as well get done with the experiments and the gifts for other people.

The last couple weeks of school they sent Mabel, who wasn't a whole lot of help. But she was pleasant to be around and was kind to the children, and that was appreciated. When we had 'wear your tie dye day', she commented that she did not have a tie dye to wear. So I tied a shirt for her, but because of the nasty ouchie pain in the ankle, I wasn't in the mood to mess with dyeing. Even though I can sit for quite a bit of it, I have to be up and down and up and down. Between that and the knee, it gets old. So now that I've recovered quite a bit from the end of school year crunch, I can do the dyeing. I figure I'll give her a call and meet for lunch somewhere and I can give her the shirt.

She's very large, and I wasn't sure what size to make. I think the one I am doing is probably about the right size, or is a little too big. So she could always wear it around the house.

I just haven't had the time or inclination to really get started on the dyeing. Looks like this weekend is it. I'm about to be laid up again anyway, surgery looming over my head. So may as well have fun while I still can.

The weather for the past week and the next week is just about perfect. 75 or so during the day, down to 55 at night. Makes ya wonder if the other 340 days a year living here are worth it. Ha.

I am working on an insects/arachnids unit. About finished with it. Will have to deliver to summer camp before the great slice and dice, which is in a couple weeks, give or take.

I do a unit or two at my site every year, "Please Bug Me". The kids really enjoy it, we make bugs and learn a lot. One of the things I do is put out a trivia question every day. There is no pressure, but they can go home and look up the answers either alone or with their parents and come back and tell everyone what they've learned.

For example... Q: Are Daddy Longlegs really the most venomous spider in the world?

A: No. They have no venom and no fangs. And they're not a spider, either. They are a completely different creature. Although they have eight legs, so they are arachnids, they subsist on things like decomposing leaves. They're a gentle creature that not only would not hurt anything, they can't.

Many parents, upon seeing the question immediately say, "Oh yes, they're the most poisonous spider in the world, but their mouth isn't big enough to bite you."

I can say that I have personally changed the opinions of tens of people in my time out there in my little country school.


Eric is grilling hamburgers today. With the reflux, that means I have to eat fairly early in the day. And we haven't done the grocery shopping for the week yet. Which can't happen until I shower. And he showers. And no, not at the same time. It's not fun to shower with a friend, because one of you has to be cold while the other one hogs the hot water, there isn't enough room in our shower for more than one leviathan and because he's still at his computer. In fifteen seconds, I will not be.
