Don't worry, not the worst thing in the universe or anything like that, but a not-good thing happened yesterday morning.
One of my small girls was coming in with her mom and her brother and somehow the big, heavy outer door caught her finger.
No one knew at first, she just kept walking in, put her backpack down on a cafeteria bench, shed her coat. Then she started crying. Loudly and obviously hurt.
Her mom was the one who administered the first aid to her. They went to the adult bathroom that's right next to the cafeteria and cleaned it up a bit. Then sat together on the bench by my back room while I fetched supplies. Bandages, ice pack... Mom said, "I wish I had some Neosporin to put on this. I don't like to just leave it this way."
"I have some antibiotic/pain gel cream," I told her. "I can't give it to her, but you can." I got it for her, put it in her hand and she applied it to her daughter's finger. It was her right ring finger. Tiny little hand of a first grader with a big slice across the largest knuckle. I felt SO bad. Not my fault, but still.
I've been paranoid about those damn doors since I started working at that school.
I block them open when we all go across to the next hallway to wash our hands, I remind the kids loudly to move the door stop with their foot rather than touching it, I watch it carefully, often holding it myself until everyone has managed to get in after playtime... ughhhh.
Hate it when someone gets hurt. Hate it hate it hate it.
Hoping for a better day today.
I remember the doors when the kids were in school. I can't imagine a finger in those doors, it would likely be lost! Glad that was the case with yours, but still hate to see kids get hurt.

ReplyDeleteI knew what you meant. I am surprised that they haven't fixed the hydraulic thing to have the door close a little more slowly. I have added it to my list of things to discuss with our principal, though.
DeleteAw, yeah. I feel the same way when I see that happen to someone, especially a small person who is my responsibility. Hope she heals up quickly.
ReplyDeleteShe was doing GREAT on Friday. No ill effects. The Polysporin/pain gel probably helped. I am glad her mom was there to apply it, as I could not legally do so.
