So I sort of posted twice in one day. Post number one is below this one. If it matters. If not, carry on.
One of the little projects we did was a snow scene.
We made a compacted circular base of aluminum foil, covered with a layer of model magic to conserve clay and to keep it from cracking.
Very thick pieces seem to crack.
The children pressed the bottom of a teddy bear and the bottom of a little tree into the damp clay. After that dried, I painted the clay with sparkly glitter paint. After that dried, the kids glued the bears and the trees into the impressions they'd left on the base and glued the base onto a cardboard coaster. That had to dry, too. Overnight.
Then, I put styrofoam snow into plastic tumblers from the dollar store and put a ring of glue around the rim. I inverted the bases (which had dried for an entire weekend) onto the tumbler and let that dry for 24 hours, too. Hopefully all of them held together and no one ended up with styrofoam snow all over their house.

ReplyDeleteThe kids were super excited about them. For me, that's the measure of a project... does it make the kids feel joy? If yes, then I have done my job.

ReplyDeleteI had most of the supplies on hand, too. I think I will have enough left to do a similar project in a few years. I try to vary what we're doing so we aren't doing the same things every year.
