My pain is nothing.

Got through, I think 34 shirts today. That's a lot.
My feet hurt a lot. My knee, too. Of course my knee always hurts.

My back hurts. I'm tired. It's hot and I worked hard hauling things out and in and out.

But while I was taking care of all the tie dye stuff, one of the little boys fell off the monkey bars and broke his arm.

We notified a parent immediately and she came to get him. One of the staff stayed with him indoors while they waited, and the rest of us went on working on shirts and playing outside. The other kids wouldn't have helped by being indoors, it would have upset him more to have people towering over him while he was lying on the beanbag with an ice pack.

We have his younger sister, she worried incessantly all afternoon.
When she was picked up, we learned that his arm was fractured and he was sedated so they could set it. Poor kid.

It was just one of those silly accidents. He wasn't doing anything wrong, just crossing the bars. Holding on with one hand and lost his grip. Fell on his other arm.

It's horrifying to have something like that happen to one of the kids. It really upset all the adults, but we don't let it show. We merely say lightly that, "He's going to be okay." and then change the subject or go on to the next item on the agenda for the day. Kids pick up on emotions as much as words, so we try to keep the conversation and mood light and friendly, not that we have kids getting injured like that on a regular basis. Poor guy.

So yeah, my feet and my knee hurt. And my back is sore. But it's not anything like falling off the monkey bars. Poor kid.

  1. Poor kiddo. And in the summer , too, won't be doing much swimming now. If he comes back to your program, have the Sharpies ready!

    1. He'll be back next week, the family is on vacation this week. They're giving him a waterproof cast, so he can swim and still be a kid.

  2. Yeah my kids have been falling a lot lately, it's just.. life. We always try and keep our own emotions out of it and it helps a lot.

    1. It really was just one of those things. No matter how vigilant we are, no matter how closely we monitor them, they get hurt. Stuff happens. I really hated to see him get hurt, though.

  3. Bless his heart! Hope he's on the mend quickly, but kids usually are. Bet you will be really glad for the weekend and I hope you will take some time to recover, too.

    1. I haven't rested a lot this weekend, but I'm doing pretty well. Feet aren't too bad. Wish I could say the same for the knee.

  4. :(

Sad. But think of the stories he can tell, and the cast he'll have to sign!

    1. He was pretty excited when he came in with the xrays. And everyone gathered around him and wanted to see. He's an adorable little guy, but I am pretty sure the broken arm won't slow him down much. He'll probably break an arm or leg two or three more times while he's growing up. Fearless kid.
