Nothing. Or Everything.

That's what I got for Valentine's Day from my husband.

This isn't new, it's how we always celebrate. We don't buy extravagant gifts.
I know I've mentioned here before how we celebrate daily... I know it sounds corny but it's true.

I come home from work and there's a fire in the wood stove. If there's something I wanted for dinner, he's already started it for me. He does laundry. Dishes. Whatever needs doing.

He takes care of my feelings, always wanting to know how my day was and actually listens to me when I talk.

I can wake him up in the middle of the night if I have a bad dream.
I can wake him up in the middle of the night if I want to talk, too. Although since I need lots of sleep, I don't usually feel like having a long, drawn out conversation in the middle of the night.

Sometimes we wake up together because we're getting old and gotta use the plumbing. We have some amusing conversations then, both of us a little punchy and making less sense than usual. Those conversations usually end with one of us drifting back off to sleep and we almost never remember what we talked about during the night, only that we *did* talk.

I was reading my Facebook feed today, and I'm a little surprised by the number of women who expect their men to buy them something and then are disappointed when they don't.

One person said that all the other women in the office got flowers and she was trying to 'keep her spirits up' since her husband didn't get her any.

Good grief.

We're at the stage where if we want something, we save up and then we go buy it. I know how backward that is, it's the American Way to charge it and spend the next five years paying it off, but we're backward people. :)

We don't need anything. We have it all. Plus more.
I could live in a cave somewhere, and as long as I can hook up to the internet and I have Eric, I'll be content. All the extra stuff is just stuff. :)

So now I'm going to hit post, go draw some pictures and spend the evening with my favorite guy.

  1. We don't do gifts either, but he did get me a card. When gifts get bought around here, it's for the kids, or grandkids. I already know he loves me, he has to, he has stuck with me for all these years... and I'm not that easy to live with.

  2. This year Joseph gave me just what I needed--time away to relax. I've been pretty stressed and he took me away to where we could explore coffee shops, look in fun shops, gasp at the beautiful scenery and have time together. Best Valentine's Day ever.

  3. We spent what amounted to maybe $15 on candy, cake, and a card for myself, Tony, and the boys.

At the end of everyday, I'll take our 2 am conversations over a Dove chocolate heart any day. (But the gi-normous card was kind of a nice touch.)

  4. Ed and I went out to dinner. (Shrimp Scampi for us both). Then he drove me over the snow rutted & piled streets to buy yarn to keep me busy during the blizzard the 14th & 15th. Who could ask for anything more. :0) Not I!
    (((hugs)))
