Feels So Good (The Man in Black)

One can find almost anything at Fred Meyer, the local emporium galorium.
Furniture, televisions, video games, DVDs, music, iPods, groceries, first aid supplies, small appliances, toys, books, cards and stationery, office supplies...

Jewelry. A full-service jewelry store is near one of the main entrances.

There's a pharmacy. I get my prescriptions filled there. Last year, I got a flu shot there, too.

Chase maintains a branch of their shitty rip-off bank there, too although they chased me out of there ages ago with their fees for everything and their inability to provide even the most rudimentary level of customer service.

Clothing and shoes are upstairs at our Freddy's. You can have your choice of the escalator, the elevator, or stairs. It's always quite warm up there. There are no walls separating it from the rest of the store, only fences. One can stand up there and survey the entire store below.

What else. Hm. Plants, cut flowers (I bought all the flowers for Matt and Amy's wedding there) fertilizer, garden gnomes, luggage, paint, keys made. It really is a pretty amazing place, and walking in can be quite an adventure. You really can find just about anything.

The one we usually shop in employed our son for several years. He works in a different one now, but he spent a few years doing the graveyard shift. Working with other night creatures. One of those creatures was Forrest. Forrest had an amazing sense of humor and came up with some hysterically funny things. Matt used to share them with us.

In our area, there is a man who goes to several area stores. He dresses from head to toe in black, sings hymns in a not-very-good bass voice and prays loudly outside the stores. Occasionally he accosts shoppers and tries to witness to them. It's sort of scary, really.

And at our local Fred Meyer, he does one other parlor trick. The man brings his Flugelhorn (yes, I know the difference between that and a trumpet... do you?) and standing near the railing/fence thing on the top floor, plays.

He's no Chuck Mangione, though. He plays just a few notes, over and over. It's not a song. It's more like an alert. A hunting thing. Forrest used to call the guy The Horn of Gondor.

Evidently there is more than one meaning. When you look it up on Urban Dictionary, it's a little disturbing.

He's been asked to leave the store several times. He always complies, but he comes back.

He was there yesterday when I stopped by. Sometime I am going to have a camera with me and snap a photo for you.

I texted Matt to tell him that I'd seen the Horn of Gondor at his old store.
And in a strange plot twist, as I was driving home, I saw Forrest walking down the street.
Horn of Gondor.

  1. Don't have a Fred Meyer around here, but I have heard other people mention them. We DO have oddball characters all.over.the.place!

  2. I'm blessed to never have run across anyone tooting his "Horn of Gondor" while shopping......and hopefully will continue to be blessed! We have our share of weirdo's, but nothing to compare to that!
