ICY you...

It really is amusing... the breathless plastic people and their on-air orgasms over the bit of ice and snow we have. My favorite bit from this morning was a reporter in Hood River having the camera zoom in on the black bumper of a Suburban. It was lightly sprinkled with snowflakes.

"You can see right here the size of the flakes!!"

My brother Dick, who lives in Central Oregon, texted me this morning. Laughing over the people on the news who were having a cow about the weather.

He asked in his text, "Are you okay? There was a snowflake on the news and they said it was headed right for you!! Do you need me to come help you evacuate? Pull you out of a snowbank?"

I told him the only evacuation going on was occuring on-air, the reporters evacuating their bowels in excitement. "It's Armageddon. And armageddon sick of it!!"

My prediction from last night came true. One by one the local school districts closed. Some of them made the decision last night.

And I got out of bed. Looked outside. Wasn't bad. The ice was just beginning to fall, I could hear it ticking off the side of the house and see it bouncing on the black pavement. The weather guys *said* it wasn't going to really get started until 7 AM.

Checked the school district website and the news websites.
Nope. Although 99% of the metro area had closed their schools for the day, OUR district schools were still open.

Reluctantly, I showered.
Dried my hair.
Got dressed.
There was more ice freezing on my car. Eric looked out the window and said, "You're not driving in this. If they don't like it, you just now quit your job."

And finally. FINALLY. Our own Mr. Dithers decided to follow the example of every other fucking school district in the area and close the schools in our district for the day, too. I sat here all dressed up and nowhere to go. Swearing. Goddamn it.

I would definitely have stayed in bed. Where it was, you know, WARM. So I waited awhile because I was awake and all, but finally went back to bed. Then I kept waking up. And couldn't get comfortable. Had to pee. And couldn't get comfortable. Gahhhh.

Finally caught a decent nap. Then I got up, put on pajama pants to go with the shirt I was already wearing and haven't done much of anything all day.

Now I've been sitting in front of the computer for a couple hours chatting with Lyssa and trying to help her find items needed for her home. Seems moving in with clueless people means she will need to get a few things for her own needs. Sent her a link to the closest Craigslist, hoping she can find a few things there, too.

I ordered her a set of dishes and cooking stuff that's designed either for a couple or for a dorm setting. Had it sent directly to their local Sprawlmart, all they have to do is go pick it up. Evidently they're not very well stocked yet.

She asked her boyfriend where the salt was the other night and he showed her a container full of Burger King salt packets. ::snort::

So that's the news. It's cold. There is ice. Snow has been falling most of the day on top of it, although it's blowing away as quickly as it falls. There is still an inch or so of ice on the plants and the trees and the driveway.

I seriously doubt that it will melt overnight. And I won't be the least bit surprised if I get up tomorrow morning and go through the exact same procedure. And have the same outcome.

Silly Mr. Dithers.

    1. there is always something better around the corner... or so they say..

Maybe this is your sign that you need to move to Monument Valley.

  2. If and when we get snow here, or even ice, it's cause for a holiday. Rarely happens, but it's still colder than I would prefer. My body is aching and it's not even winter yet!

    1. I hate cold weather, but it doesn't seem to make me feel any worse physically. The WIND however... that makes my knee worse. I have a theory about that. Which I am too lazy to type up right now.

  3. I think the ice you get is more scary than the stinking snow we usually get. Both are a serious pain in the ass and can be dangerous as hell, but the ice? that's something I don't have a lot of experience with.

    1. I have a ton of experience with snow. The ice thing seems to be something one just gets to deal with around here... not fun and nothing like snow. It's just flat out dangerous.

Snow is a big deal here---because if we get any, we've no equipment at the ready. Milk and bread, batteries and candles are long gone and people are at Lowes, cursing them for not having anymore kerosene heaters. And, we may, MAY, get 1/2 an inch or so. and suddenly no one knows how to drive! It's a circus.
You WERE joking about the salt. Right?

    1. Not joking about the salt. Nope. Lyssa thought it was hysterical. I told her that salt is really cheap and to go buy some. Today was the day she was going to get out and get some shopping done, hopefully she did.

I have preparations for most disasters, as I think that anyone who waits for the government to come help is a moron.

So we have water and candles and assorted other things that will be in short or NO supply if there is an extreme natural disaster.

I wonder how long Lyssa will be able to endure this different, (and unprepared!) new life? Glad you're still always there to guide and empathize---and not saying, "See? I TOLD you so!", 'cause you didn't. :) Trudy

    3. I think she'll do okay. She's smart. And no, I didn't tell her so. No predictions have been made. If she needs help, she knows she has a home here with us. If she ends up managing and making it through, I won't be a bit surprised.

But I sure do miss her. A LOT.
