Waaayback..

We had our wedding rehearsal/party for everyone who wanted to be there on Halloween night.
At the time, we didn't really consider what night it was, and during the crazy party we had at our apartment that night, someone finally said, "Hey, we should get some candy!"

A few of the more sober people went to 7-11 and bought some bags of Reese's peanut butter cups. I think it was probably about 11 PM or so. No more trick or treaters.

Carl, the best man, had tried several times to make it to the door with beer to hand out to children, but we kept him from doing so.

So when I think of Halloween, that's what I remember.

That and my mom waiting until the last possible second and buying me the only costume that was left in the store.

And I'm pasting that little story in here... and heading for bed a little early. I know the kids will be rowdy today and I'll probably need a little extra rest to cope with them properly. :)

Now I had a good mom. She loved me, read me stories, listened to my stories, took me camping, baked cakes, managed to get us out the door for school on time, took care of me and my two little brothers, kept the house clean, did all the laundry, helped my dad finish his college, drove a school bus, managed to get us swimming lessons and all the other things moms do.

(My word program has an issue with the quality of the sentence I just typed, but I don’t care.)
But when I was in the 7th grade, and the church youth group was having their party, she waited until the last minute to buy me a costume. We lived in a tiny little town in Eastern Oregon. Population 1500. One place in town carried costumes. I picked out the one I wanted as soon as they were out on the store shelves, but since we were always broke, it had to wait.

By the time Mom got there on Halloween, all the costumes were gone. The only thing left in my size was Shaggy, from Scooby Doo.

That’s today’s explanation for why I’m this way.

  1. My mum and dad did the same, we were fed, kept warm and got holidays when they could. I'm a little ashamed to say that I didn't always appreciate their efforts.

    1. Aw, kids don't know. They can't... the stress would overwhelm them. Being appreciative now and doing better for your own kids than what was done for you sort of makes up for it.

  2. Get lots of rest, there's going to be a lot of hyped up kids tonight and tomorrow! (and probably the weekend, too)

    1. Yeah, they all brought candy to school in their lunch boxes. Our rule in program is that yes, you can eat a piece of candy with your snack. But you have to sit at the snack table and you need to wash your hands before you snack. As usual.
