Ordinary Saturday activities, right?
Also caught a great nap. Recharging for the week ahead.

I have an online friend who's expecting a baby soon. Some of the stuff going on with her made me recall the crazy things that pregnancy did to my brain.
When I was expecting Matt in 1987, we finally got the money together to get a headstone for Eric's mom's grave. I received a phone call telling me the stone had been placed, and drove over there to look at it.
The date was wrong. It said she was born in 1940.
So I called the funeral home and told them about it.
And it wasn't their goof.
It was mine.
I remember calling Eric at work to tell him, a process that involved someone having to drive out to his job site, pick him up and drive him back to the office to call me back.
And when he called and I heard his voice, I started to cry. I was crying so hard that I couldn't breathe or speak or formulate a coherent sentence.
Of course he thought the worst had happened and that I'd miscarried.
He was so relieved that it was just the headstone that I don't think he really minded I'd goofed up.
I felt so bad about messing it up, too. It was nearly 500 dollars for that piece of engraved marble to be made and placed, and then, as now, that was a lot of money. I can't remember ever falling apart over something the way I did with that.
Of course in retrospect, it was pregnancy hormones that caused the huge overreaction, but I didn't know that then. In fact, I thought I'd been perfectly rational throughout the whole pregnancy. It was only when looking back at all of it that I realized how nuts my mental state was. Odd to be at the mercy of something that you absolutely can't control... inside yourself!
We didn't ever get the stone replaced. When I told Eric's grandmother about it, she sort of shrugged it off. Said, "Well, people will just think she was a year older when she died, that's all."
I can't believe how HUGE it was to me, though.
I obsessed over the strangest things both times I was expecting.
During pregnancy #1, I knew that something was going to happen to Eric.
With baby#2, I became obsessed with something happening to Matt. He was in school. He went home with a friend on the school bus. And I KNEW he was going to be run over by the school bus. I knew it. I dreamed about it. I worried over it for DAYS. Rational? No. Pregnant.
What's weird was, it seemed perfectly normal to me to be so weird!!
How about you? Was your brain crazy when you were pregnant? I thought everything was fine until a few years later when I realized how nutty I'd been.
Sadly, I was completely rational when I was pregnant (2 boys), but these days......
ReplyDeleteI *thought* I was rational. It was only much later that I realized I hadn't been.
DeleteYes, I too came up with some weird ass shit while pregnant. Hormone OVERLOAD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it bizarre? That and the food thing... I never had weird cravings. What I had were food aversions. But I can't even really call it aversion, it was more that some things held the appeal of gravel. I would no more eat a potato than I would a handful of gravel. Also carbonated beverages. There was no way in hell that I could even think about drinking one. So strange.
DeleteThe only thing that made the pregnancy hormones worth it were the kicks of reassurance I'd get every day from the little ones. That, and watching my tummy bounce when they had the hiccups. :)
ReplyDeleteArgh!! The hiccups kept me awake all night long with Matt! I really did enjoy being PG, though. Loved feeling them kick and move. The hormonal effects though... could have cheerfully lived without that.
DeleteI don't think my pregnancy brain ever got back to normal. Guess it got used to being in that state!
ReplyDeleteI think I ended up with a new normal. Which wasn't all that normal. :)
DeleteI had peripartum depression through both pregnancies so yes I was very crazy. I was so terrified that my babies were going to die. I didn't think I would be able to hold them. My husband says he had to walk on egg shells during both pregnancies but that's not how I remember it. Though I do remember one night where I wanted a cheeseburger and tater tots and he wouldn't go for me so I ate his tots too. Lol. Glad thats over with.
