Unlabeled

I was reading Joanna's blog today.

Click on the link if you'd like. (trust me, you'll like her blog...) She's been blogging quite awhile, and I think I've been reading there since the beginning, too.

The post I linked to is talking about the people she sees in her area of Los Angeles. All dressed in designer clothing, fancy cars, jewelry... and that's just to go grocery shopping or to get gas. Her neighbor has a designer CAR parked in front of the house. How bizarre is that?

I have to admit that I'm not label conscious at all. I don't care if it came from a designer as long as I can get it at Goodwill, it's made of 100% cotton, and doesn't bother me when I wear it.

It has to be able to be tossed into the washer and dryer. If it needs ironing, I won't buy it, either.

I iron by taking the wrinkled items and throwing them into the dryer for about 20 minutes and hanging them up. Well, usually. Sometimes I toss them in the dryer and then forget I did it. And the next day I open the dryer and go, "Oh. Shit. I forgot." And start the dryer again. I admit there has been more than one occasion that I did that repeatedly. I think four times is my record. Perhaps I should be ashamed, but there it is.

I know I have a couple expensive label jeans in my closet, but they came from Goodwill. $90.00 on the website. Way too much if you ask me. They're DENIM for goodness sake!

So I will wear a label, but not because of the label. I will wear it because I found a good deal at Goodwill.

It's pretty rare for me to buy new clothing at a retail store. And if I had to tell the truth (mostly I try to) I really don't need to buy anything new for a long time. I have a lot of clothes. More than I need. I'm in the process of weeding them out, actually.

I feel like the people who buy things because of a label are being duped. I can't imagine why anyone would pay the prices they pay for things. Even if I had a lot of money (and believe me, I do not. I'm lucky if I'm able to pay all the bills on time... sometimes I can't) I would not buy expensive things to wear.

Wouldn't you have to leave the price tag on if you wanted to impress your friends anyway? And if your friends are the type to be impressed by a label or what you're wearing, do you think you might just be a teeny bit shallow?

This week KATU featured the spring/summer fashion show in Paris or Milan or something... not sure. The models all looked angular and harsh and anemic. So did the clothing. A lot of flesh colored stuff with lace and shredded edges. I did see a couple things I'd consider wearing if I dyed them first. :)

So what do you think? I'm guessing that most of the people who read here are completely outside that nutty world of labels and obsession with brands.

Can you imagine what you could do with the kind of money it takes to buy one of those 'summer wardrobe' items?
