Unappropriate!

Alden, Loren, Tommy and Dennis were playing a board game on Monday afternoon.
I was listening to several conversations around the room (part of the job) when Dennis gasped. "Alden! That's unappropriate !" he said.

I walked to the table, and he turned to me. "Alden said an unappropriate word!!" he said, shocked.

I looked at Alden, who was completely mystified.
"I did not!" he said. "I was telling them about this show I saw on the tv! It was about Humpback whales!"

And Dennis gasped again. "He said the 'H' word! That's unappropriate!!"

I didn't laugh.

"Dennis, 'hump' is not an inappropriate word."
He looked shocked.

"A camel has a hump."

He looked at me, wide eyed, then spit laughter.

"There are humps on the playground."
That one just about made him pee his pants. The other boys laughed because he was laughing.

Sometimes it's really hard for me not to laugh, as I've mentioned before. This was one of those times.

I said, "Sometimes people use words in an inappropriate way, but the word hump isn't inappropriate."

I try not to correct a child's word usage, instead just using the word correctly in my own speech. It seems to get through better and doesn't embarrass them that way.

So he didn't look fully convinced that the word hump is not a bad word, but at least he stopped gasping while Alden was trying to tell them all about the show he'd seen.

I refrained from quoting George Carlin on 'two way words" like Cock, Balls and Prick.

"It's okay if it happens to your finger... yes, you can prick your finger but don't finger your prick!!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The headache came back on Monday morning. I took a migraine pill about 7. Fought the monster to a draw long enough to get home, pick Lyssa up and take her to Goodwill.
I found a new jacket there. I was going to give it to Eric, the thing weighs a TON, so I thought it might be good for his work (It's 'Arborwear', which I looked up on the internet. My GOD that stuff is expensive!)
The jacket is brand new. It was $12.99. And on the website, sells for more than $100.00. Holy crap.
Not sure yet whether I am keeping it or trying to resell. (Probably keeping it, Eric said it's too heavy for his use but thinks I should wear it, as I'm cold quite a lot during the winter.)
And of course reselling would require effort on my part.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So the headache is coming back now, and I'm heading off to bed. If things go the way they usually do, I will take a dose of migraine medication now and wake up headache-free in the morning. Which will last about a month, unless I get a rogue migraine in between... or unknowingly ingest something with MSG in it.

Please try not to say anything unappropriate in the commments. ;)

  1. Good way to explain words used "in" and "out" of context.

      I remember in the not-too-distant past lamenting if it was hump day and no one even offered.

    1. I seriously laugh every single day. I've been taking notes so I can write more of the little things they're up to. It's a trip.

    1. A lawyer. He loves to argue, and he doesn't even have to be right. Or honest. He's a neat little kid, but sometimes he's a little bit annoying, as you can imagine.
