We had a guess how many fish contest at work for Dr. Seuss week.
I bought some store brand Swedish fish (why the hell are they called Swedish fish? Ever wonder about that?) I was so curious I just looked it up on Google. They're called that because they came from Sweden, I guess. I have never eaten Swedish fish or the store brand knockoff... doesn't appeal to me. I don't like gummy bears or that sort of thing, either. No gumdrops.
I will eat jelly beans, but only the good kinds, like Jolly Rancher or Smuckers. And do NOT give me licorice jelly beans or anything else. PTUI!!!
So anyway. Once again, starting a post with a digression. Which is not unusual for me.
I made a little sign and covered a white box with some Suess stickers to hold the little papers people wrote their guesses on.
I put 54 fish in a container. 54 in another to double the prizes. The kids and parents guessed how many were in the containers.
It actually generated a good deal of excitement, and the little guy who won one container (he guessed 52) was ecstatic. When his mom came to get him, he ran to her, jumping up and down excitedly, "Mom! I won! I won!!"
So cute.
The little girl who won the other package doesn't attend every day, so she doesn't know yet that she won, but she guessed 54 on the nose.
It cost me three bucks, which I think was worth it.

And... one dog.
We're dog sitting for a friend. Said dog doesn't like them being gone. She's bewildered and bothered and sad. She doesn't want to go outside, I think she feels like she's guarding the house and can't leave her post. She has her tail tucked under her, and watches us suspiciously the whole time we're in the house. We left the back door open for her, got out of her way, and suggested that she go outside. She didn't. I haven't seen any, um, dog treasures on the floor, and no puddles, but I can't for the life of me figure out how she's holding it in so long.
Matt has been taking the morning visit, and she seems to like him better. She went outside for him Monday morning at least.
She did eat something tonight, and her dish was empty when we got there, leading me to believe that she's been eating a bit at least.
I know she's going to turn herself inside out with joy when her family comes home, that's for sure.

And. I have a bullying incident to tell you about tomorrow.
Evidently things aren't always what they seem. And I'm glad I take time to ask questions and listen to the answers.
Okay, I'm off.
Someone knows you well enough and TRUSTS YOU to watch their dog. :0) You're "good people" in my book!
ReplyDeleteBack when I was around nine or ten, I won a contest such as yours with jelly beans and won the cake I was sooooooooooooo wishing that I could. A Mothers Day cake with a pin on it that read...MOTHER. I've never forgot it!!!
Ironically...hubby's mother always dressed up on Sunday and wore a pin just like it. :0)
(((hugs)))Pat
I love those guessing contests! The boys and Girls club just did one with Orbies... god awful things that they are.
ReplyDeleteSwedish fish are one of Youngest's favorite things... he has to have the store brand ones though, the others are not Gluten Free.
You just do the coolest things. I always suck at guessing amounts or distances. I HATE all things gummy too. And jelly beans. Yuck!
ReplyDeletePoor doggie. That is one reason I hate to go anywhere overnight. Nomad is such a baby and he would be so confused.
Poor dog, that breaks my heart. I know you are busy, but have you tried taking some time and sitting down, to see if the dog will settle down and maybe allow you to give some encouragement and possibly to go outside?
ReplyDeletesounds like a great contes. My dogs are good , but I can only leave them with my BIL or neice, and even then they pine . Winston who never licks , wehn I come home will leap in my lap and lick my face ! (all 90 lbs of him)
ReplyDeleteYour friend who owns this sad dog is very grateful for the kindness you shared with her (the dog . . . well, and me too, I guess!). In the past, she has not been as bothered by our leaving. When we did it the last time, we put her in a kennel and that was a huge mistake. We swore never to do it again. Thanks for helping us out last minute. We promise that if we have to do this again, we will find a happy place for her to go.
ReplyDeleteYou are always doing such fun things for the kids! Makes me wish I were a kid again and in your class!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a gummy fan either. But I will take those black jelly beans off your hands.
ReplyDeletePoor doggie. I hope her family is home soon!
