Mosquito Spit and Centipedes

Mosquitos spit into the wound they make so your blood will continue to flow rather than clotting. And that's why mosquito bites itch. Ick. Oh boy, mosquito season is fast approaching, too. Can't wait.
Ugh.

The last question of the day this week was, "What kind of insects are edible and do they taste good?"

We had quite a conversation about that, including the fact that in our foods are many insect parts and eggs and that we ingest bugs all the time without even knowing it.

We touched on the differences in cultures, including that some countries serve things like dog, cat, and rat on their menus in a restaurant. We agreed that if it is something you've been eating since you were a child, you wouldn't be disgusted by the idea, but that if someone were to hand one of us a fat grub they just pulled out from under a log and say, "Eat this." we'd all have the same reaction.

EWWWW!

We made centipedes from pipe cleaners, pony beads and little fuse beads for the feet on Friday afternoon. Sort of a cute project, not really all that complicated. One of my girls made 14 of them, she had a whole little family. They all had names and were different colors and sizes.

It cracks me up that a simple little project like that can be so much fun for a kid. The little group of girls that does most of their stuff together made a few, too, and had a whole story going with them. They divided a sheet of paper with marker lines and labeled bedrooms and kitchens etc... the centipedes were quite happy, evidently.

I found a Littlest Pet Shop version of Monopoly at Goodwill last year. Suddenly everyone is playing it, gathered around the board every afternoon, arguing over who gets to be the lizard, who gets to be the sheep... and the HUGE one... who gets to be the BANKER! Oh my goodness such a lot of arguing over such a small thing.

It has gotten to the point now where I draw names to determine those things, as it's the fairest way we can come up with to do so.

I need to see if I can find some more board games at Goodwill that the kids will actually PLAY. Some games just do not interest them at all, but it seems the classics are classics for a reason, even though Monopoly with little dogs and cats isn't the same as with the shoe and the car, it's still the same game and they're currently really enjoying it.

I don't have a headache as I start this weekend, which I am really very grateful for, and I'm going to be able to go to bed early, which is also a gift.
