Membranes and Valentines

On Monday night, I must have dreamed at least eight times that I was suffocating.

I had some rare disease that kept growing this weird membrane in my throat, causing me to not be able to breathe. It was scary as hell, and I was so sleepy that I kept waking up thinking it was real, turning over, drifting back off, and then getting into a deep sleep and having my mouth close and then not being able to breathe through my nose. Over and over and over.

Not really restful sleep.

Ugh.

But. I am not feeling horrible, or not completely. I don't seem to be running a fever, and so far at least, no joint or muscle aches. Just a rather nasty head cold.

Food doesn't taste good. Doesn't taste bad either. Doesn't taste. Period.

So if you want to sneak some ground up veggies into my dinner, I won't notice the taste right now. :)

I dreamed that Eric was trying to help me breathe. He got this weird hook thing from my doctor and was reaching down my throat with it, attempting to pull the membrane that was suffocating me OUT. And he'd get it started, and it would... snap back. With a little teeny hole in it, making it harder to hook the next time.

Yuck.

And because I can't just tell you I have a cold and then leave it at that, I have to tell you about the kids on Tuesday afternoon.

All the classes had parties, and most of the kids gave candy to the other kids. So in a class of, oh, 30 kids, 25 handed out candy. And there were kids in my program who would cheerfully have eaten every piece they had. Of course there are rules, because I am there to spoil their fun.

They can have two pieces of candy during their snack time. But. They must eat snack, first. It was crackers and cheese, which hopefully balanced the sugar and sugar they ate.

We spent an extra 15 minutes or so in the gym, but that wasn't enough. Not that it ever is. What they really wanted was to go outside.
"But it's SUNNY!" they protested.

Never mind that it rained most of the day, and that they had indoor recess because of it. The field was wet and they wouldn't have been allowed on it anyway during school. Our rule is that if it's a 'no' during school, then we have to make it a no during the afternoon. When I reminded them that they had not been outside during the school day, they looked sheepish.

Reese* wondered aloud how I knew that.

I check in at the office at least twice a day. I say hi. I call them if there's anything strange or different on the playground. I call them in the afternoon after all our children are accounted for, or if they're not all accounted for so that together, we can locate our kids.

I know a lot about what goes on out there, actually. :)

So they ran off some energy in the gym, and I sent them home with most of their candy still in their backpacks.

I'm sure their parents appreciate that.

  1. AND, if the parents are strong enough, they didn't allow them to eat it all at one time! I'd imagine there were some sleepless kids, high on sugar, who will be very tired on Wednesday... or have a belly ache.

  2. Don't know how you hold it " all together." ;0)

  3. Hope you lose the membrane tonight. And I'm sure the parents are thankful. My kids on the other hand ate all of their candy before 10am yesterday. And the little one has his vday card exchange tomorrow, so it'll be round two tomorrow. I always wonder if it isn't better to just eat it all at once and get it over with, you know.

  4. I am one of the weird moms that lets their kids eat all their candy at once. I used to make them do one of two pieces at a time, but then it was a constant state of "can I have some candy?" and it drove me nuts! I'd rather deal with some extra energy for a day than the obsession for a week. And, so far, no one has thrown up! (knock of wood, fingers crossed, salt over my shoulder....)

  5. Yuck. That dream/nightmare sounds horrible. Whatever you ate before bed that night, don't do it again! :-)
