I went to the dentist on Tuesday morning.
Now, guess what I didn't do.
Never mind, I'll just tell you.
I did not stay awake even a moment on Monday night worrying over it.
If you've been reading here awhile, you know I have a pretty serious Dental Phobia
If you haven't been here long, take the time to read that. Really.
And yes, it's all true.
Sometimes people suck, ya know?
So yeah.
I also did not need to take a xanax to get there. I used to have to take one to sleep two nights before, one to sleep the night before, one the morning OF the visit, and one about half an hour prior to the visit.
And when they took my BP, it was 120/78.
And as I write this on Tuesday evening, I am spitting little bits of resin stuff into a paper towel. Apparently I've been too aggressive cleaning my back teeth and have some toothbrush abrasions back there. So she put some stuff back there that's supposed to cut down on the sensitivity I have and then, told me to brush a little lighter and use a softer brush. And I agreed to do that.
And I was fine.
No tears.
No almost-tears.
No shaking.
Or hyperventilating on the way home.
Yes, that's happened before.
But not this time.
Nothing.
Does this mean I am over my phobia?
No. It means I trust my dentist and hygienist not to surprise me or hurt me suddenly.
If I had to find a new dentist, I'd be a basket case.
So now I live in fear that he will retire before I die.
Don't tell anyone, I have Dental Phobia, too! *cringe
ReplyDeleteI hAdn't been to the dentist since I was 11 apart from a whitening treatment for my wedding.I'd had all 4 wisdom teeth out in hospital under anaesthitic,so when I had to have a tooth out last year I was terrified. I was like you, explained my fear and they were fantastic with explaining waht they were doing,why ,what I would feel etc. I don't mind going if I have to now.

ReplyDeleteAnd we are seeing the dentist we go to mostly because he's incredible and because he's younger than us, so we're hoping he'll be our dentist forever. :D

ReplyDeleteWe had a horrible ordeal with a pediatric dentist with our kids. Of course, they didn't allow the parents to stay with the kids. I wrote a scathing letter and had a verbal smack down in their office. The thing that bothers me is that so many people take their kids to this dentist in our community. It's like a status symbol. We also have many many children around here who start wearing retainers, etc by age 4. Disgusting.
We have found a wonderful, gentle family dentist who is probably the nicest man God ever created. He has six children of his own and treats everyone with such dignity and respect. And.....he's GORGEOUS. It's okay, my husband knows I think so....

ReplyDeleteBut I have a plan... there are multiple dentists in the practice... so odds are, they'll always be someone to be good for me.
