Ever sit and stare at the screen

With almost nothing in your head? Well, that's not entirely honest. I have all sort of things in my head, it's just that they're little random bits and pieces of stuff. Disconnected.

Ha, sort of like public education. Random bits of rote knowledge, added on, bolted together, and zoooom, down the assembly line to the next disconnected factoid.

Bunches of shit, no context.

That's a more honest motto than the one I see on decals on my school district's vehicles...
"Public School. There's no better place to learn."

I'm going to see my friends this afternoon. Get my neck and shoulders adjusted, have my feet run through the wringer... borrow a book or two, return a couple (Tami has a library in her house) and share the total weirdness of having kids away at camp. Tami at least has had one kid at home. I haven't seen Matt much at all this week except for the day we went Goodwill hunting. Thursday, I think. That was fun, but he lost sleep to do it. He works graveyards, and I kept him out until noon that day.

Tomorrow we're picking up our daughter and her friend from camp. I'm very excited to see her, but not excited about the car trip to Eugene and back. We'll probably take them out to lunch on the way home.

I've had this weird craving for soda this week (had a migraine, perhaps that relates?) and have had a difficult time not ordering one the last couple times we've gone out. It's been six months since I drank a carbonated beverage. I won't drink soda again unless I am crossing the desert dying of thirst and come upon a vending machine on the leeward side of a dune and have the correct change. Otherwise... no.

I don't like long drives. Eric is taking most of the day off to drive us, which I love. We don't have much alone time, and sitting in the car for a couple hours talking is something I do like. I wish I could knit or crochet, but I'd get carsick. Oh, and I don't know how to knit or crochet. That would sort of get in the way, too.

And am I the only person who does this? I keep a list in my head of things I need to do, take care of, deal with, think about, mess with, worry over... and it's on a continuous loop. The only time the loop stops is when I add something else to it or finish worrying over something. And the stuff I cast off seems to come back, too. Even if I've finished with it, the thoughts still seem to be attached. I see fragments of them flash by when the loop repeats.

::Sigh::

I got Lyssa's school schedule in the mail yesterday. I need to send them $35.00 to buy the 'student planner' and pay the locker fee. Locker fee? Does that mean we get to keep the locker after we use it? Aren't the lockers already paid for by me, the taxpayer?

The way I'm looking at it, I've been sending them my tax dollars for the last 15 years and except for the time Matt spent in band and choir (which also cost me money) I haven't used shit from them. I think they ought to be sending me some money!

The schedule tells what classes she will be taking and at what time of day... but does not tell me where the bus will pick her up, what time that will happen, what kind of friggin' school supplies I'm supposed to buy for her and who her counselor will be. Am I just supposed to know who her counselor is from what 'house' she's been placed in? And no, she was not chosen to be in Gryffindor, but at least she's not in Slytherin.

So now I've added 'call the *@#! school' to my list of stuff I need to do.

And I've haltingly, and with many pauses for conversation with my hubby, trips to the back door to let the dog out and back in and back out, a trip to the bathroom to get rid of some used water, and a trip to the laundry room to start the dryer, managed to put some words on my blog for today.

Hope your Sunday is not as disjointed as mine. Or that if it is, you'll share by writing about it on YOUR blog.

  1. I will forever remember the phrase "trip to the bathroom to get rid of some used water" -- never heard that one before.

  2. Your post reminds me that I start back to work next week. The only good thing about that is school clothes shopping.

  3. Easy, there, Ami my friend. Generalizing and saying public schools offer the kind of education you're describing would be like generalizing and saying all home schooling is inferior education.

I feel pretty confident that the education I deliver to my students is worthwhile, connected, and meaningful. And I'm sure you feel the same way about the education you give to your children.

  4. Jason dear, you're a person, not an institution.

I believe there are completely wonderful people in schools. Many, like you, dedicated and professional and caring. The school I work in has a staff of amazing individuals and in my five years there, I have yet to hear one be disrespectful to a child. They're also remarkably consistent in monitoring behavior and not letting things escalate into bullying.

    But.

It's still an institution, and they're still constrained by educratic nonsense and most of them are still being forced to teach to the test.

I simply don't believe 'schooling' is necessarily the best way to learn, and I don't believe public school as a whole is a healthy place for many kids.

It's not a reflection on you or on what you do. Don't take it personally. Please. I have great respect for people who choose to work with kids. Most of them have wonderful hearts and are the people a child remembers fondly into adulthood. What you're doing makes a difference.

I know what you mean with bits and pieces. Problem is, I'm supposed to write an article. Of course the bits and pieces of crap I can think of don't really work for that. :) 1000 words! Anybody got 1000 words to spare? Good words please.

Oh, and I love your insightful reply to "Jason dear". :) (No offense, Jason).

  6. I'm just curious, then. May I respectfully ask, if you feel so strongly against the institution, then why do you work for one? I would think you would want to stear way clear of it, if public school as a whole isn't a healthy place.

But about teaching to the test? On that issue I agree with you.

  7. I don't work for the school. I work for an independent contractor in an after-school program.

Why do I work there? Originally I took the job because it fit in with the part time hours I needed and would supplement our income a bit. I stayed because I sincerely enjoy the job. The kids are awesome, and I have a blast working there.

I am not an 'abolish public schools' person, although I believe many of the children I've become acquainted with through my job would thrive and do better if they were not constrained by the public school environment. I can sure expand and expound upon that if you'd like. :)

In a perfect world, every child would have a parent who has considered every educational option and chosen the one that works best for each of their children on an individual basis.

Public school can certainly be a choice, I just don't think it's always the best one.

And I didn't say it's not a healthy place period, simply that as a whole it's not a healthy place for many kids.

Some children appear to thrive in that setting. Many do not. Growing up in public school isn't a happy experience for some children and is not a good place for them to be.

  8. I said, "Growing up in public school isn't a happy experience for some children and is not a good place for them to be."

Meaning of course, that the kids who are having a crappy experience are not in a place that's good for them.
    Just wanted to clarify.

  11. I live by the 'loop', you know the one that circles through your head... does writing it down help you out? 'cause sometimes it does help me for a while at least. with the pregnancy, a lot of things have dropped off the loop, with the possible move, things have jumped back on. so sometimes, there's not always something from 'leftovers' for monday morning lunch for the hubby, but then I say, gee honey you can go out to eat and take whats his name from work who has been working so hard, isn't this his last week? yeah, that has worked the few times I havent had a plan or a backup plan. hubby was more than happy to comply. usually there's a backup plan. however, when i was never sure when i was going to yarf next for 5 months, my hubby cut me some slack. he's good like that. the last couple of months, he has made fun of me. i just say my priorities have changed. however, since i havent had to work the last 2 weeks, i have gotten a ton done and there's a half a lasagna in there for lunches this week. AND! I remembered to clean out the fridge last night for trash day today. luckily, not much bad in there! yeah!
