Here's the reason I've been hesitant to suddenly reimburse myself at this late date.
Last spring, a family chose to leave the troop. It's a long story, but I didn't kick them out. They chose to leave when I issued an ultimatum regarding behavior and expectations.
2 months later, I got an email from the mom telling me that her girls (she had three in our troop) had earned more than 60 dollars worth of badges outside of troop time (over the course of two years!!) and she wanted them. I've always told my girls that they can earn as many things as they want outside troop time, tell me, and I'll make sure they get their badges and awards.
I wasn't going to debate with her about it. I went to the council store, purchased the stuff and sent it to them.
What pissed me off about the whole deal was that last spring, that family did not participate in cookie sales or any other fund raising. So they not only behaved in a way that upset the other girls (and me), they took from us without giving back.
So. I did not like the two month gap and the 'oh, by the way' thing she pulled. And even though I know it's not the same, I feel funny about waiting this long to reimburse myself. Now that the troop will be disbanding, it feels a lot like an 'oh, by the way' moment of my own.
So here is what I am going to do.
I'm taking $250.00 from the troop checking account and depositing it in my own checking account today.
(Hey, it'll help pay for the Imitrex. That's some expensive stuff. Eek.) Especially when one's insurance policy JUST changed and that person now has NO prescription coverage. I know the medicine will be over $100.00.
When we're done with this weekend's excursion, I'll evaluate how much money we spent and try to get an idea of what August's trip will cost.
Supplies won't be much. The items needed for our projects are already at my house, so very little extra will have to be purchased for that. Our major project will be the tie dyeing. I also have a super-event planned for either Saturday or Sunday, but I have most of what I need for that, too.
The site fee for the council property is already paid, so we won't have that, either.
After our last outing, I'll go ahead and take what's left.
The total I get vs the total owed to me will be close enough not to matter, and we will still have a great time.

Well, I still think you should get all of it, especially since you have receipts to back it up, but it sounds like you have a well-thought-out, unselfish and practical plan.

I agree with mom#1 BUT if you are all right with the loss, then all's well that ends well.
ReplyDeleteI can totally understand where you are coming from. When I quit both troops I just wanted out and didn't care if I got paid back or not (my out of pocket was way less than yours, under $40).
ReplyDeleteYou had a great time with the girls over the years and want to end on a good note. You've got a great plan in place. It wouldn't be outrageous to ask each girl coming to chip in say $5 to help with the cost. Just as a thought.
