Remember me mentioning the article in the local parent's magazine?
It's eyecatchingly titled, Beat Summer Brain Drain.
I grabbed a copy of it to read, and spent a few minutes this weekend looking it over. I'm surprised. I expected an article about how to do academic stuff with your child over the summer.
Nope.
Instead, the writer described how I homeschooled my kids.
Ideas like having your child(ren) write the grocery list, taking them to the grocery store and having them estimate the grocery bill, taking them to the zoo and observing the animals, drawing pictures of them and discussing what you learned. The article suggests going to the library. Finding classes and camps about topics that interest your child.
Done being out and about? Stay home and play board games. Kids can learn counting skills, learn about money and strategy and winning and losing. The article suggests that Legos are educational, too. (surprise)
The writer even suggested the book Carschooling.
She ended by saying that talking to your children, playing games with them, and interacting with them helps them retain knowledge of all the things they've learned.
No!! Ya think?
If you ask me*, sending them back to school after such a stimulating summer would be a mistake.
*no one has asked me.
So true. Amazing, isn't it? Funny thing is, sometimes those are just the women who oppose homeschooling the most. :)
