I worked the early morning shift today at another school.
The regular morning person isn't feeling well, and the site director, (who would ordinarily have to take the shift) is pregnant.
Pregnant and ready to have that baby at any second. I saw her yesterday afternoon and believe me, it can't possibly go much longer. It would be impossible.
Remembering how very tired I was when I was pregnant, I took pity and said I'd work.
So I was up at 5:20 in order to be there.
After the water aerobics class tonight, I'm betting I'll sleep pretty much like a brick. :)
Have to get up at the regular time in the morning, though. I'm going to visit my doctor and get my annual piece of paper for the mamogram.
I am also going to get something for migraines. I just can't do this anymore. My desire to get rid of the pain is finally stronger than my nervousness about taking a medication that might have bad side-effects.
The headache lasted a week this time. The bad part was only two days.
(Only. Ack. Every time I moved for two days I had to hold in my right eyeball.)
My camera still isn't here. I'm eagerly awaiting its arrival, though. I'll probably be afraid to use it once I get it. Maybe I'll put it away like my grandmother's Wedgwood.
Naw. I'll use it.

On the parent table at the site this morning was a local magazine. On the cover were these words.

I didn't have time to read the article, but we have the same magazine at our site.
I'll try to catch it this afternoon, but my guess is they're recommending lots of academic stuff over the summer. Wouldn't want the kids to get 'behind' now would we? Personally, I think kids desperately need that down time. It's an opportunity for them to explore and think and learn what's important to them. I think I'd go nuts if someone expected me to do meaningless book work all summer, but that's just me.
Think about the things required in school. REALLY think about them.
How much of the busywork is really necessary?
What is the most useless thing you were forced to do in school?
The rings in gym class!! Haven't ever encounted a need for that in real life. I guess maybe the humiliation was preparation fr something and made me a stronger person?
ReplyDeleteOther than that, the list of ridiculousness is much too long to list. I love summer. We allow our brains to drain right out and we play with them in the pool.

ReplyDeleteYeah, I think gym class was the worst. I'm not sure how climbing a rope and dinging a bell helped me in my life today, but I did it several years in a row. The funny thing is I couldn't move one inch up that rope today. I guess it didn't help me.

Oh and I found an anime (sp) lesson in an art book I picked up. I'll scan it later and email it to for your daughter.

I hear ya on summer program. YUCK! They had KB & JB do that before I pulled them out. JB said it ruined his summer. KB was really to young. She just thought she was having fun. LOL!

When I was in Grade 4 we memorized the premiers of the 10 provinces. Yep, not memorized any more, and to think they have changed numerous times since then as well.

i have nieces and nephews that go to 'summer school' but a lot of it is trips to the swimming pool across the street from the school, to zoos, etc etc, they do a lot of 'outside' stuff, but manage to stay 'up' or catch up on classroom work. its really helped a niece of mine, otherwise she'd have been held back, probably a few times already. she just doesnt 'have it', you know? and of course they refused to hold her back from kindergarten, her birthday is like 5 days before the cutoff date, and she didnt know her colors, etc etc going into K, even though she'd been in preschool for more than 2 years. it was like talking to a brick wall, and still is sometimes. she couldnt do a 3 step thing (go wash your hands, get the plates and come back here), she'd just stand there and stare at you. it was too much. and of course they refused to get her reading help, get her tested for dyslexia (even in 3rd grade still messing up her B's and D's, HELLO?!?) I dont see her having a real good time getting through grade school, to be honest. They should have kept her in preschool one more year and worked with her, but, well, they know so much better, having cheated their way through high school, than their sister /inlaw who graduated from college with a degree in psychology, who took several classes on 'exceptional' children, which included both smart and needy types of kids. whatever. i feel sorry for her. her parents refused to get her help because of some imagined stigma. that wasn't fair... but summer school seems to keep her going...
ReplyDeleteMemorizing the dates and details of every battle fought in the Civil War. Our high school history teachers were Civil War Reenactors and sometimes would wear their uniforms to class.
ReplyDeleteI have the internet, I have every date I need at my fingertips. Back then, I had an encyclopedia. Not like I'd need to know a battle date in the middle of an emergency. "Quick, the bleeding won't stop unless you can tell me the dates of the Battle of Shiloh."
I thought it was incredibly useless to memorize all the states and their capitals.

Diagramming sentences was another colossal waste of time. We spent half a school year in our 7th grade English class diagramming sentences. When Clay Crim asked the teacher why we had to know this, and suggested that it was sort of stupid, he got in huge trouble.
