A few months ago, I created a Facebook account in my maiden name, figuring it would be easier for any old friends who wanted to be in touch to find me if I used that name.
It wasn't long before I was found by several people I went to school with.
None of them were people I cared to hear from. I started getting 'friend me!' emails.
One of them was a bullying asshole in school, and from the tone of his emails and the stuff he writes on other people's 'walls', he grew up and became a boorish oaf that no one in their right mind would want to hang out with.
I was also contacted by a guy who's working on organizing the 30 year class reunion. Let me check my schedule here... oh gosh, sorry. Can't make it. I also didn't go to the 20th, missed the 10th, and will still be too busy when the 40th comes along. If anyone is still alive when the 50th rolls around, I'm sure they won't be surprised to find me elsewhere on the big night.
(An aside here... what idiot originally thought it would be a good idea to gather people together who hated each other in high school every 10 years or so to see who got fat, went bald, or had eleven kids?)
Thing is, I didn't like these people when I was forced to be with them all day five days a week in school. I was forced to spend even more time with some of them, since I was required to attend church and Sunday school services every week. They were not any nicer to me in church than they were in school.
ANYWAY. I know that some of my regular blog readers have found me on Facebook, and I don't want you to think this is about you... but I am going to close or suspend or whatever the hell they call dropping the Facebook account.
I'm calling it a social experiment that didn't work. There were only about four people I really wanted to be in touch with, and none of them are there.
Phooey.
Tomorrow, I'll tell you a story about the boorish oaf. Unless you have a heart of stone, you'll be on my side by the end.
This post gave me a chuckle.
ReplyDeleteI went to my tenth and I was too busy for the twentieth and I'm pretty sure I'll be all booked up for the thirtieth. You're singing to the choir on this one.
Honey, you don't need to tell us the story -- we're already on your side. You have a keen sense about people, so if you say he's a boorish oaf, then he is.
ReplyDeleteso far none of the arseholes have friended me, in fact, I got blocked like I was the one that caused trouble, it just made me laugh so hard (and I think I blogged about it a few weeks ago).. point is, close if you must. I never got a twitter account, I just feel its kind of dumb and celebrities are now just getting super stalkers because of it. shrug.
ReplyDeleteAfter saying no for a very long time, I finally signed up, just last week. And I have nearly deactivated it, several times in only a few days. It gives me a very uneasy feeling, also an overwhelmed one.
ReplyDeleteI haven't been to any of my reunions either. I'd rather do just about anything than go to one. I wonder about some of them but I found out last year that one of my good friends passed away at just over 40 years old. I've been trying to find a friend in Hawaii but I don't think I'll ever see him again. I just want to know if he settled down or if he has kids. My bff from 7th grade keeps me in the loop and I keep in touch with a couple of friends but that's it. I don't "do" Facebook and I cancelled my Twitter account. My blogs are enough "work!"
ReplyDeleteHugs!!
Oh, just read Gail's comment and I have to ditto what she said!

A number of years ago my dad ran into a friend of his shortly before their 25th class reunion. Dad ask the man if he was going. His reply? "I didn't like the assholes then, and I don't like the assholes now."
ReplyDeleteI've followed his motto and haven't gone to any of mine. I'm not even sure how many there've been. I should have missed at least the 10th and 20th. There may have been a 5th, that sounds familiar if not really stupid. The 25th should be this year. Don't really care, I'm not going to see the assholes.
I hate school reunions! Thankfully, I have moved several times and changed my name twice due to marriage: I think I've got away lol!
ReplyDeleteI hear ya! I opened Face-book because of Dan's family was telling us things that his ex sister in law was saying about us. She didn't name names, but Dan and I knew who she was talking about. She had invited me and after 4 days I responded to her invitation. Then I found out she had wrote all that mess on My Space. Well, for a year I just used it for picture space. LOL! Here in the last few weeks I have been on face book playing with my hatch-lings. LOL! It helps keep my mind off things and passes time when I don't much to say on my blog because I know everybody gets tired of hearing the same ole story all the time. I hardly talk to anyone in face-book, just play with hatch-lings and green patch.
ReplyDeletePs. I have never went to any of my Reunions either!
Ps.2. If you want to you can look up Katie or Kitten on Face-book.
To heck with high school reunions. As far as I'm concerned, if you are lucky enough to survive high school, then your prize is NEVER HAVING TO GO BACK!!! I'll be collecting on that prize forever, thank you very much.
ReplyDeleteI had a Facebook account for like . . . 5 minutes. I immediately deactivated it. So let the Facebook rejects unite!!!
Looks like you really hated high school huh? There are a lot of people I know like you are, and we can't really blame you. And in fact, I feel for you. Anyways, just move on and forget about these people, they won't do any good. Nice post by the way.
