My excitement for the day...

No school today. I don't have to get up at 5. I do have a web based thing to attend that counts toward my training hours for the year at 10. Sitting here in front of my computer in my robe and slippers, drawing little tangly things and having a snack.

I get to relax and sleep in and stay home until about 20 minutes before noon. Because in a magnificent display of complete arrogant fuckery, the manager of food services in the school district thought today would be a good time to hold the summer food training.

At noon. Yep, in the middle of a day off. She thought it would be a good idea since school is closed that day. It might have been okay if she'd scheduled it early, like at 8 or so... but no. RIGHT in the middle of the day. For two hours.
So don't make any fucking plans.

You remember that, right? We receive the same instruction every year. We're reminded not to serve all the white kids first. We're reminded how to hand each child a brown bag lunch, insist they take all the components of the meal, click the little clicker to keep track of how many meals we serve and sign papers.

This is your federal government, folks.

Waste all the food that does not get eaten. Feed only children. And I don't care what you've been told... no one in a position of power in the federal government is the slightest bit interested in proper feeding of children.

One look at the crap they're fed in school and during the summer under the guise of 'nutrition' from the FDA is all you need to debunk that particular myth.

The "food" is processed/predigested turkey, flavored with chemical crap to turn it into ham sometimes, bologna or just plain turkey other times... white bread, underripe fruit, goldfish crackers or other chunks of salt and processed cheesy sprinkly stuff and some celery or carrots. Oh, and a little teeny carton of NON fat milk.

For growing children.

And really. If a person has taken this training once, they know what to do.
Count the lunches. Make sure not to discriminate while you're serving them. Sign the papers that say you've served them. Then send them back to the "food" prep kitchens to be thrown into the garbage.

Good times.

  1. The irony astounds me every year. My sons were told that they had to buy full second lunches even if they only wanted another slice of "pizza" or an apple.

Middle school is better, as they have the a'la cart, but in all honesty they bring lunch more now a days simply because by the time they are through the lunch line, there's no time to eat.

    1. When you consider what's being served as 'food' in school cafeterias, or at least in my school, bringing your own lunch is a really good idea.

They don't cook in our kitchen, they put trays together from predigested, preformed "meat" products. They're not allowed much in the way of seasonings. They get in trouble if they try to make the food palatable. Kids are staying away in droves. And I don't blame them. I wouldn't eat that stuff on a bet.

  2. It is really too bad that you can't salvage at lest the under ripe fruit to donate to a food kitchen. It's not likely that these children contaminated it in any way. You're right -- the rules make the program wasteful.

    And non-fat milk? YUK!

    1. It would also work if we opened up the lunch program after official hours and let anyone who wants a lunch come and get one until they're all gone. It's just an appalling waste.

Children don't need non-fat products. Actually, adults don't either. Fat and carbohydrates are a necessary component of one's diet at any age, barring medical restrictions. I have six year olds who are worried about fat content because of all the propaganda. It's really sad.
