Alyssa's decision to attend the local high school this fall has caused a bit of change here at home.
She hasn't spent a huge amount of time in formal math study, but wants to make sure she's ready for math at the high school. So, I've hauled out the curriculum that's been sitting here, collecting dust, for about six years. Seven? Don't know. A while.
We started daily lessons yesterday.
She's not far 'behind' (that mystical, public school term that's really a convenience for record keeping and classification of children) and I don't anticipate any problems for her when she starts school... at least not with math.
Going from learning in the world to staying all day in an institution... well, there will probably be some interesting times for her there.
It's going to be a huge adjustment for her, but every time it gets brought up, she can't keep the smile from stealing over her face. She's really very excited about this new chapter of her life.
I'm adjusting to the idea.
She is going to be 15 years old in 13 days. If I can't allow her to start making some more serious decisions at that age, then when?
Do I wait until she's 18?
Naw.
One of my jobs as a parent has been to help my children learn how to really consider things. To evaluate the benefits, the risks, the possible troubles in decisions they make.
I know from watching them that most of the time, they do very well.
I unsubscribed from all my homeschool e-lists yesterday, though. No point in reading. And definitely no point in doing a swan song post as some homeschooling moms of my acquaintance have done.
It's like wearing a bear costume and standing on the corner, shouting "Hey! Look at me!!"
I prefer to briskly walk away, looking like I have a destination.
The only one who knows I don't will be me.
:)
You will keep blogging though, right? Please say you will.
ReplyDeleteI'll miss you, though. Couldn't you just sort of come 'round once a week or so?
ReplyDeletepretty please?
Oh my... this is getting serious. A new chapter... so exciting and so, well, sad... All will be well. I know it. :)
ReplyDeleteAh it sucks when they make their own decisions doesn't it? Babies yesterday, and now they're all, "I'm responsible for myself" and stuff. Sucky.
ReplyDeleteKeep blogging though. I don't come here for your homeschooling stuff (well, not just for that anyway). I dig your blog. Think of it like moving. You don't lose who you are just because you're not "a homeschooling mom" anymore. You just change your address.
I followed you here from a comment you left on Lori's blog.
ReplyDeleteI am also allowing my 13 year old to go to school next year. He really wants to and I want to allow him to make his own choices. he's very excited and I'm excited for him.
i still have 3 at home and I'm looking forward to having some more time to focus on boy #2.
It certainly is a strange feeling to transition from being just a homeschooler - wow!
Bless you as you move forward!
GoodLuck~!
ReplyDeleteI so agree, there comes a time we have to let them make the big decisions for themselves. It may be she finds the experience rich and rewarding and it may be she finds the school part quite a drag and waste of time. She will still have to make her own decision. And, once a home schooler, always a home schooler, the philosophy on education doesn't change just because a child enters the institution; sometimes it even backs up the philosophy with personal experience.
ReplyDeleteLife is full of new chapters. Your blog is great and I'll still be dropping by ... ;0)
